Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

Aug 28 Updates

Hello!

Sorry for not posting sooner, I was galavanting across the country :)

First, let me give thanks to the many people that kept SLR going while I was out of town and who help to keep SLR going when I am in town too:

Many thanks to Andrew Kent, Mary Casey, Michelle Moser, and Dara Schulman for doing our most recent mid-point water stops!

Many thanks to Emily Leary (and Aaron Cheskis) for doing the September post-run beverages!

And, many thanks as well to Steve Maguire and Mike Fox-Boyd for sub-leading while I was out of town!

Robert Wilkerson will be providing our post-run beverages at Iwo Jima for the month of September...be sure to thank him as you enjoy your refreshments after SLR!

We are in DESPERATE need of a mid-point water stop person for this week, September 2! The route is out and back on Capital Crescent...so it is an easy one in terms of placement.
Please contact me ASAP if you can volunteer!!

Other dates where we still need beverage help are:
1) midpoint water stop volunteers for 9/16, 9/30, and 10/21

2) A post-run beverage person for the month of October.

Remember that you will be reimbursed for the cost of the beverages, etc...we just need your help in terms of "doing" the refreshment stops!

Cheers,
kerry.

SLR Updates

Hello Everyone,

I hope you are all doing well :)

I just wanted to touch base about a few things:

1) It seems as though a number of people fell on last week's SLR course. We will be more mindful about telling people to be extra careful on the trail-running portions of our routes.

2) For those of you that DID fall, it was not necessarily in vain :) You can be considered for a SLR Hardcore Award:
http://www.dcroadrunners.org/longrun/hardcore.html

So, if you fell last week (or anytime recently--I know there are other "fallers" out there :))--
please email me a detailed description of your fall, what you hurt, include pictures...etc...and we will consider you for a Hardcore Award!

3) Many thanks to Jessie Sacket for providing last week's mid-point water stop and to Kristin Dahling for providing post-run refreshments for the month of July!
Please be sure to thank Jessie and Kristin when you see them!

4) The cue sheet for tomorrow's run is here:
http://www.dcroadrunners.org/longrun/routes/MarymountChainbridge.html

Please study it, print it out, etc....

5) Andrew Kent will be providing the mid-point water stop tomorrow....thank you, Andrew!

6) Emily Leary will be providing post-run refreshments for most of the month of August (Aaron Cheskis will cover Aug 12)...thank you Emily and Aaron!

7) I will be at SLR tomorrow but then I take off for a 2+week cross country adventure. Don't worry, SLR will go on :)
I've got lots of great folks sub-leading SLR while I am gone and all of our water needs are covered!
If any major issues arise while I am out of town, please contact our president, Ed Grant, or my fellow vice-president, Joe Racine.

That's all!

See you tomorrow,
Kerry.
