Members and Guests:
OUR NEXT CLUB RACE IS THE FORT HUNT 10K, #8 IN THE SNOWBALL SERIES, SUNDAY MARCH 9TH AT 10:00 AM. PLEASE CHECK RACE CALENDAR TO YOUR LEFT FOR DETAILS. MANY THANKS TO RACE DIRECTOR KRISTIN BLANCHAT FOR PUTTING ON THIS EVENT! IF YOU CAN VOLUNTEER, PLEASE CONTACT KRISTIN AT k_blanchat@yahoo.com
1. VOLUNTEERS AND PACE GROUP LEADERS NEEDED FOR SUN TRUST NATIONAL MARATHON:
DCRRC is one of the area running clubs affiliated with the Sun Trust National Marathon and Half-Marathon (note the new corporate sponsorship. As the "home" club for Washington DC, we want to make a good showing, both competitively, and in supporting the race.
Volunteers are needed in several areas, listed here:
Saturday March 22, 1-4 pm: Work at Marathon office, 1725 Eye Street, NW, preparing packets for pre-registrants. Pizza will be served.
Friday March 28, 10 am to 9 pm: Work at registration at DC Armory. (Shifts are available, so you don't have to stay the entire time.)
Saturday, March 29: RACE DAY. (1) There are needs for course marshalls, water stop volunteers, and split-timers at key mile markers along the course.
(2) IN ADDITION, the Marathon is looking for PACE GROUP LEADERS in the 4 to 5 hour range. Your entry to the race would be "comped." If you have already signed up for the marathon and would like to serve in this capacity, please let the DCRRC president know. If you have not signed up and would like to so serve, also let me know. Pace group leaders must run the entire race -- splitting is not feasible on this year's course.
For general volunteering tasks listed above, and for more information, please check this link:
www.nationalmarathon.com/volunteer_info.asp
T-shirts, refreshments, and volunteer certificates will be available to all volunteers.
2. 10K Training Program: The annual 10K training program, directed again by Peter Lamberton, started Saturday, 2/23/08. Details can be found under the "Programs" button to your left. This program is designed for novice and beginning runners, but also intermediates. Yes, there is still time to join the Program!
3. RRCA Coaching Certification: Unfortunately, the Clinic scheduled for June has completely sold out --in fact, it sold out within 2 weeks after it was posted on the RRCA website (which was the first official confimation of the date). Our request to "reserve" spots prior to the official registration opening was not granted, and apparently the capacity is only 30 people. I apologize for not coordinating this more quickly so we could grab at least some of the spots in this small group.
DCRRC alone had about 15 people who responded with interest in attending. In order to meeting the need for certification in CPR and First Aid, and training in coaching theories and workout plans, we will be discussing setting up our own program, at about the same time of year, intending to cover all coaches in the Marathon (Fall), 10-Mile, and National Marathon/Half-Marathon programs.
Obviously, these plans are just in the talking stage right now. However, if there are Club members who would like to work on this project, please contact the Club president. There are awesome resources available in our area, and we plan to tap into them.
4. National Rehabilitation Hospital Healthy Running Lecture Series: The NRH Regional Rehab group, together with Georgetown Running Co, MedStar Health, and The Sports Club/LA is sponsoring a series of lectures on Healthy Running, featuring lectures from medical experts on common running injuries, including both joint and tendon problems.
The lectures are at the GRC Store in Chevy Chase, and the Sports Club LA facility in downtown DC.
