When did you begin running and why?
I started running in June 2012 after a coworker encouraged me and provided a Couch to 5k training plan. I wanted to lose weight. I ran my first half marathon in March 2013 and my first marathon in October 2013.
What are you training for right now?
I'm training for the Marine Corps Marathon. I have run it five times before, however, my running progress was setback in 2020 by the pandemic. I'm hoping this race will help me get back on track. It is my favorite race.
What is the toughest run or race in which you have participated?
The toughest race was the Marine Corps 50k in 2019, my first and only 50k. It was cold and raining at the start of the race. One of my shoe's insoles was twisted out of position from the start. When I reached Haines Point, the sun came out but the path was flooded so my shoes got wet again. I ended up with blisters on the bottom of my feet but I finished.
What is the most important lesson running has taught you?
The most important lesson running has taught me is to persevere and just show up. The first mile is always the toughest but it gets better after that.
What is your favorite route in the area?
My favorite running route is the Custis Trail because it has so many undulating hills including the challenging Corkscrew section.
What is your proudest running moment?
My proudest running moment was finishing my first marathon in 2013. Ironically, the person who encouraged me to start running didn't believe I could possibly run either a marathon or a half marathon. I set out to prove him wrong and in the process gained a running community and improved my health. When I finished the Marine Corps Marathon, a young marine draped the medal around my neck, saluted me, and said, "thank-you." I couldn't believe he was thanking me.
What is your running book and/or movie?
My favorite running movie is "Without Limits" about Steve Prefontaine.
