When did you begin running and why?

I've always tried to be active. I used to play soccer once or twice a week for several years before I committed to running. I fully fell in love with running in the spring of 2019 when my soccer playing team was consolidated. I was more drawn to running because it is a solo exercise that I can do according to my schedule any time anywhere and it avoids bumping injury with teammates compared to soccer.

How did you find out about DCRRC and when did you join?

I came across DCRRC doing an online search. I was searching groups that I can learn from and train with. Once I reviewed the website, I found DCRRC convenient for my training goals, therefore I joined in summer 2019.

What are you training for right now?

At the moment, I’m training for the California International Marathon (CIM).

What is the toughest run or race in which you have participated?

When I trained for my first marathon this summer of 2021 it was very tough to build up my body strength and endurance with the heat. I remember one of the races that was particularly tough for me - 2021 DCRRC Paul Thurston/Burke Lake 4.5 Miler race because of the
humidity.

What is the most important lesson running has taught you?

One is being consistent in any task will pay off and the other is patience. When I start running in 2019 I never imagined myself finishing a marathon, but I worked hard and consistently even when I had a fall injury I keep going back at it.

What is your favorite route in the area?

I like many routes in the area but if you ask me to pick one, I would go with Mt.Vernon trail connecting with Hains Point.

What race day traditions do you have?

I always try to get up early, eat breakfast, which is a bagel and cereal. I also have some coffee.

What is your favorite post-race meal?

"Genfo" it's a traditional Ethiopian food and I am big fan of Raw Meat as well.

What is your proudest running moment?

My proudest moment was last month when I finished my first marathon in Chicago without walking.

What is your favorite running book and/or movie?

Born to Run by Christopher McDougall.

What is your life like outside of running?

I really enjoy spending time with my wonderful wife Direbe, and my Kids, Lukas Zema, who keep me very busy with all their activities during the school year and in the summer. I like spending time with friends and reading. I work as software engineer on government contracts.
