Kristin Hume

kristinhume.jpgWhen did you begin running and why?

I started running in April 2020, after my gym shut down in the beginning of the pandemic. At first, I thought thatrunning would be simply a means to an end — stay reasonably fit until the world opens back up and I can get back to Orange Theory and SoulCycle. Little did I know how quickly running would become a true passion of mine. In the 3 1/2 years since then, I've run every marathon and half marathon I can cram into my schedule (and budget!). And I've somehow evolved into this person who gets up at 5:30 am to do speed work on the track, and considers my Sunday long run the peak of my weekend relaxation.

I started running in my mid/late-30s, so I'm a bit of a late bloomer. Sometimes I feel sad that I didn't stumble into it sooner, but there's also a certain power and pride in discovering an entirely new side of yourself later in life.

How did you find out about DCRRC and when did you join?

I found out about DCRRC from a dear friend of mine who's an amazingrunner. Running had been a solo sport for me, so realizing that it could also be a social activity was like discovering an entire new dimension. I've never known a community so passionate and supportive of one another. All are welcomed and everyone's successes are celebrated, regardless of your level or unique ambitions. And I've met so many people—particularly women—whoinspire me so much. It's incredible.

What are you training for right now?

I just ran the Richmond marathon three weeks ago, so I'm taking a beat to recalibrate and set some new goals. So far, I'm signed up for two half marathons this spring (one in DC and one in NYC) and the Chicago marathon this fall. This month, I'd like to finally conquer my fear of the 5K with a holiday fun run. Having to go out so hard and fast from the beginning freaks me out!

What is the most important lesson running has taught you?

That we are so much stronger than we imagine. I've had so many moments in my runs when I felt like I couldn't run another step — only to somehow unlock a secret reservoir of strength I didn't know I had. I know I'm not alone in this.

What is your favorite route in the area?
I love the Custis trail — and then picking up the trail that goes straight from Rosslyn to the airport. It's especially beautiful when you can catch a sunrise or sunset.

What race day traditions do you have?

I'm that obsessive weirdo who follows all the rules. If I've read it in Runner's World, it's part of my routine. I'll eat breakfast at 4 am to make sure I'm 3 hours out from start time; get to the race an hour early to fully warm up; kick back a gel every 40 minutes during the race. Whatever it takes to do my own personal best!

What is your favorite post-race meal?

Waffles and a really cold beer. :)

What is your proudest running moment?

Time qualifying for the Boston and New York marathons! I know qualifying is no guarantee, so I'm crossing my fingers that I actually get a spot in NYC 2024 and Boston 2025.

What is your favorite running book and/or movie?

I love so many running books! Can I pick three? Born to Runfirst ignited my passion, so it'll always have a special place in my heart. I also love Scott Jurek's Eat and Run, because he writes really beautifully about the mediative, present-moment-awareness benefits of a really challenging long run. Meb's 26 Marathons is also a great one. It taught me so much about running 26.2 (though muchhhhhhh slower than Meb!).

What is your life like outside of running?

I'm a mom to two little girls (ages 6 and 8). I work at NPR. I play tennis in a few intramural DC leagues when I can find the time!
