Vinona Muralidaran

vinona>When did you begin running and why?

I joined the cross country/track teams in high school with my friend. It was a nice way to socialize and be active, and I had fun, but racing and going to practice could get intimidating at times. It was once I found a friend at work that was also looking to run again that running became more consistent. In a year, we signed up for a 5k, 10k, half, 10 miler, AND MCM. Running just became fun and not about worrying if I was going to be the last one on a workout loop. The runs felt more and more rejuvenating and therapeutic, and I finally found the “runners high” again!

>How did you find out about DCRRC and when did you join?

My friend and I signed up for MCM during rush registration in 2019 and oncewe realized what we had done, we started looking for local training programs. I found DCRRC through a google search and anxiously showed up to the MTP in June 2019. I really enjoyed it and learned so much from the coaches and runners that I have come back 3 more times since. I’ve met so many incredible people who’ve kept me running outside of marathon training and I’m so grateful to have found this welcoming community!

>What are you training for right now?

I’m looking forward to the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler! Still deciding if I’ll add a spring half.

>What is the toughest run or race in which you have participated?

The Capitol Hill Classic 10k 2018 AND 2023 (so maybe just this race in general…). The first time I ran it in 2018, it was both my first 10k and probably the hottest race I've ever run. I wanted redemption in 2023 but I just came off a cold and a combination of that and starting off way too fast made for a very miserable last 3 miles mentally and physically. It was technically a 10k PR but it felt brutal.

>What is the most important lesson running has taught you?

Both discipline and that you can do hard things!

>What is your favorite route in the area?

I love the loop along Mt Vernon across the Memorial Bridge to the mall and back on the Key Bridge. I love anything that goes by the monuments!

>What race day traditions do you have?

I like to have everything pinned and laid out the night before. I usually like to have chicken parmesan for marathons. The morning of, I wake up early, eat breakfast, play some of my favorite music, and try not to panic. I also always do my nails or get them done!

>What is your favorite post-race meal?

Nothing specific! I usually get way too excited after a race to eat and almost always get some combination of coffee and fries.

>What is your proudest running moment?

Completing my first marathon in 2019! It's crazy to see how my running journey has evolved over the years. If you told high school me that I would run a marathon and then go on to run more and set PRs along the way, I would have never believed it.

>What is your life like outside of running?

I love to box and am finishing up my 200h yoga teaching certification! Other than that I work in clinical/translational research and like to travel or crochet when I have time.
