Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.
Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.
We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.
All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!
For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

Hello Saturday Runners!
Good luck to everyone running the Marine Corps Marathon this weekend! To those of you who won't be resting on Saturday, the route for this week, October 24, will be 12 miles via Upton Hill (additional map here). This is an out & back route, so if you'd like a shorter run you can turn around sooner, or for extra mileage you can continue on Custis/W&OD for as long as you like after running up and down the big hill.
Thank you Joe Buccino for post-run beverages this week! Our scheudle of upcoming routes and volunteer needs is now posted through the end of the year on the SLR page so please let me know when you can help out, and email me with at least 2 consecutive weeks (preferably 4 weeks). Volunteering is easy, much appreciated by your SLR cohort, and all beverage expenses will be reimbursed by the club.
Happy running!
Mike
Hello Saturday Runners!
TIME CHANGE: With the arrival of cooler weather and later sunrise times, this week (Saturday October 17) our start/meeting time will be moving to 8:00 am. Enjoy your extra hour of sleep on Saturdays from now until next summer!
We are also at the end of volunteer-supported mid-run beverages this season, so please take this into account when deciding what to carry each week. You can find water fountain locations by choosing the OpenCycle background (rather than google maps/sattelite) at the gmap-pedometer link for each route, and looking for the water tap icon after zooming in. Most fountains should still be working at this time of year, but keep in mind that many will be turned off for the winter in the coming months.
The route this week is GWK Shady (additional map here), which is a little bit on the shorter side at 10.5 miles for those of you tapering for the Marine Corps Marathon. It's easy to add distance to this route though, by either running an additional loop of the GWK trails (~7 miles), or returning via Memorial Bridge rather than Key Bridge (~3 miles).
Thank you Angela Katson for post-run beverages! We will be needing a volunteer for post-run drinks starting next week, so please get in touch if you can help. Our scheudle of upcoming routes and volunteer needs is posted on the SLR page so let me know when you can help out, and email me with at least 2 consecutive weeks (preferably 4 weeks). Volunteering is easy, much appreciated by your SLR friends, and all beverage expenses will be reimbursed by the club.
Happy running!
Mike
Hello Saturday Runners!
The route on Saturday October 10 will be 14.5 miles on Ross Drive (additional map here). To shorten the route, you can make it an out & back along the Rock Creek Park Trail, or to add distance an additional loop of Beach Drive / Ross Drive is about 3.5 miles.
Once again I'm going to be out of town this weekend, but unfortunately this week I was not able to find a substitute, so please familiarize yourself with the route in advance, and print out your own cue sheet if you need it. Once everyone has gathered at 7:00 am, you can self-start as a group.
Please also remember that this is the last week of the season that we'll be meeting at 7:00 am! Next week (October 17) the meeting time changes to 8:00 am, and will stay there until next summer.
Thank you Angela Katson for post-run beverages! While this would have been the last week of the season with mid-run drinks provided, we unfortunately don't have a volunteer, so please take that into account and carry water if you'll need it.
Mike
