Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR is in need of Volunteers!

Hi Everyone,

Some of you may be finding that you need to volunteer to be eligible for your Bunion Series Award....or, maybe some of you are just feeling like you want to volunteer :)

SLR is in need of volunteers for the following (please remember that the club covers the cost of the "goods"!--you just need to buy the goods and bring it to either the mid-point of the week's route or Iwo Jima):

1) Someone to cover post-run beverages at Iwo Jima for the month of September! Yes, that means I need someone starting this Saturday!
If someone could step-up for the entire month, that would be ideal.
Alternatively, let me know if you can cover 1 or 2 weekends for the month.

2) A midpoint beverage volunteer for September 15--the route is:
http://www.dcroadrunners.org/longrun/routes/ArlingtonTriangle.html

3) A midpoint beverage volunteer for September 22--the route is:
http://www.dcroadrunners.org/longrun/routes/CapitalCrescentRockCreekLoop.html

4) A midpoint beverage volunteer for September 29--the route is:
http://www.dcroadrunners.org/longrun/routes/Sidewalks%20of%20MCM.htm

5) Some to cover post-run beverages for the month of October.

6) Mid-point beverage volunteers for October 13 and 20 (see SLR webpage for the route).

Please let me know if you can cover any of these slots. Any SLR regulars who have not yet volunteered for the summer are encouraged to volunteer. It would be great if we could all share in doing these beverage services instead of having folks that already volunteered, volunteer again.

Cheers,
:)Kerry.

SLR Updates

Hello Everyone,

Hope you have all been enjoying this cooler weather. Unfortunately, it looks like things will heat up a good bit by Saturday.

This week's route is the 16 mile Loops of Battery Kemble route:
http://www.dcroadrunners.org/longrun/routes/modifiedBatteryKemble.htm

I will not be at SLR and in my absence, Brian Danza has graciously agreed to be the sub-leader.

Lynn Addington will be providing the mid-point beverage stop. She will be stationed in the little parking area at the top of Battery Kimble park ... so a little reward/incentive for everyone to get up that hill (twice). As even more incentive, she will also have Fig Newtons!!

Mary Ellen Seale will be providing the post-run beverages at Iwo Jima.

Many thanks to John Murray for manning the mid-point beverage stop last week and many many thanks to all of you for cheering me on in the triathlon :) I felt like a rock star!!

We are in desperate need for someone to volunteer to cover the post-run beverages at Iwo Jima for the month of September. Please contact me if you can do it :)

Have a great run on Saturday!

Cheers,
:)Kerry.
