Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR - March 26 - National Arboretum

Hi Runners,

The run this weekend is the National Arboretum route. The GPS and cue sheet are here. To shorten the run you can either do a shorter loop inside the Arboretum to cut off distance. You can also run out & back to the entrance of the arboretum and it is 14 miles.

I going to be out of town this weekend, so Coach Big Guy will be there to kick you off! Big thanks to Anthony for the post run drinks! We are looking for post run drink volunteers 4/16 and onwards so please consider emailing me to sign up! Have questions, check here!

Happy running!

Megan

SLR - March 26 - ROUTE CHANGE

Hi Runners,

The run this weekend has changed! Since it hailed on the last water route day and it is peak Cherry Blossom season, we are going to run the water route again! The GPS and cue sheet are here. If you want to add on to make the run longer, I recommend adding on an out and back South on Mt. Vernon trail at about mile 9.5, after you return to Arlington over the 14th Street bridge.

I am running the DC Rock and Roll half marathon this weekend, so Coach Big Guy will be there to kick you off! For those of you driving through DC to get to SLR, please be aware of road closures.

There are no volunteers for post run drinks this week so there will be no drinks! Please bring water with you.

Happy running!

Megan

SLR - March 19 - Up to 20 miles

Hi Runners,

Good luck to those of you running the Shamrock Marathon and Half Marathon! I know we have a big crew and I really wish I had signed up for the half just to be there!

The weather this Saturday is looking much better than last week where we got hailed on! The run this weekend is an out and back on the C&O Canal. The GPS and cue sheet are here. This weekend, you can run out as far or as little as you chose. The suggested route for April marathoners is 20 miles, but personally I will be going shorter. Fun fact, the C&O canal goes from DC to Cumberland, MD which is 184.5 miles!

There are no volunteers for post run drinks this week so there will be no drinks! Please bring water with you. The drinks are reimbursed by the club through this link.

I would like to start doing shoutouts in these emails starting with the Shamrock marathon/half marathon! So if you or one of your running friends runs a race and deserves a shoutout, please send me an email by Wednesday afternoon and I will include it in the next email!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Megan
