Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR Saturday, July 25

Hello Saturday Runners!

This week's route is the Glover/Mass/Capital Crescent route.  It's failry self-explanatory (first Glover trail, then Mass Ave, then the Capital Crescent trail), yet also full of twists and turns and varied terrain.  Word is our mid-point beverages will be on the Capital Crescent trail (in case you want to stick to the Capital Crescent instead of the *real* trail running on Glover), provided by Mary Endres.  Please enthusiastically thank her!  I know we'll have post-run beverages and I think Dick Conway has taken over coverage of that for this week, so please be sure to thank him as well.  He's been helping us out consistently week after week-- thanks, Dick!

A note on the post-run beverages:  they are intended to be POST-run beverages.  Please, please be considerate of our volunteers-- if you intend to carry water/gatorade/whatever on your run (and I highly recommend you do so), please make every effort to carry your first round with you from home, instead of filling up from the post-run stores at Iwo Jima.  We want to provide refills beyond the amounts people can carry, but it gets very difficult to make purchase estimates (not to mention loading, unloading, storing, and transferring all the heavy containers each week) if there's a big dent in the supply before we even have a chance to get started with the run.  This way it's easier to make sure there is enough for EVERYONE, from the first one finished to the last.

Thank you so much for your consideration!

Here's the cue sheet for this week.  See you tomorrow!

Glover Archbold/Mass Ave./Capital Crescent Loop (created by Robert Wolfe)
13.5 miles, includes combination of all trail types

-- Start: Iwo Jima
- Cross Key Bridge. Take Capital Crescent for one-half mile.
- Just past 10 mile marker, turn right through culvert. After culvert, loop to the right and turn right on Canal Rd. Take QUICK right into trailhead of Glover Archbold trail
- After 2 miles on the trail, the 4th street crossing is Massachusetts Ave. Turn left.
- After going 2 miles and passing 2 traffic circles on Mass. Ave., you'll see a little bridge crossing overhead. This the Capital Crescent Trail. Take the ramp on the left up to the trail and go left (south) all the way back to Key Bridge and back to Iwo Jima.

July 18 SLR

Hello all!

It looks like it will be a hot one on Saturday, so you may as well start hydrating now.  We will have a midpoint water stop this week in Battery Kemble Park, as Renee Dunnington has generously volunteered to give up running Chain Bridge hill in order to provide us with one!!  Please thank her for that.  And Jason Penticoff has us covered for the post run beverages, so give him a hearty "thank you" as well.

The route this week is Loops of Battery Kemble, which is one of my personal favorites for many reasons, not the least of which is the lovely repeating hill.  Another good thing about it is that it's very easy to tack on or chop off a few miles.  Take a look at the cue sheet and make your plans accordingly, and I'll see you on Saturday!

Kristin
