Carderock Recreation Area

The first and perhaps only snowfall of the 2012 Winter season occurred the night before the start of the MLK 5K and JFK 20K races. However, by the start of the races, the snow and freezing rain had stopped and the conditions were chilly but calm and peaceful. This year, the race venue moved from the Capital Crescent Trail to Carderock and the C & O Canal Towpath. Conditions yielded a light cover of crunchy but not slippery snow. Most runners who ventured out commented that once you were out there the running was very pleasant. Hopefully, Carderock will be a stable home for these races in the foreseeable future.
Jonathan Loewus-Deitch won the JFK 20K race in a time of 1:18:33. Ryan Samuel was second in a time of 1:21:51 and Michael Niederhausen was third in a time of 1:22:24. Ted Poulos was the first Master's runner in a time of 1:25:54.
On the women's side in the 20K Katherine Laco was first in a time of 1:30:38. Nancy Eiring was second in a time of 1:31:52 and Jenny Goransson was third in a time of 1:39:17. Kathleen Pugh was the first Masters runner in a time of 1:51:24.
