Alexandria, Virginia
Fort Hunt National Park is located approximately 6 miles south of Old Town Alexandria in Virginia along the George Washington Memorial Parkway and directly across the Potomac River from Fort Washington National Park (both parks honor the two forts which guarded river access to Washington.
The 10K course consists of 5+ laps around the paved perimeter road of Fort Hunt Park. There are no big hills on the course, but each lap does have some little ups and downs. The redundant nature of the course has some benefits: SIX water stops (actually one water stop that is passed six times), and the opportunity for spectators to stay in one place and cheer for their favorite competitors as they pass by multiple times!
At the beginning of the race we had the pleasure of a Full Moon remaining as the Sun was rising to the East of us, coming up over the Potomac River. As we started the race it went in two waves, the first being all the female runners and the second being all the male runners. There was massage and stretching services provided, before and after the race, courtesy of the Alexandria Back & Neck Center and there was plenty of drink and food throughout the race.
Despite the weather conditions, fun was had by all participants (runners and volunteers alike).
