Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR December 7 - Rock Creek Park

Hello Saturday Runners!

This week's route on Saturday, December 7, is an out & back run to Rock Creek Park (downloads: cue sheet and GPS). The scheduled distance is 10 miles, but you can easily modify for as much or as little as you like by simply adjusting the turn-around point. For 10 miles, the turn-around point 5 miles out would be near the Zoo. This week is the kickoff of the winter/spring Marathon Training Program, so please welcome this season's group of trainees to SLR! I'm going to be out of town this week, but Megan will be there to introduce and start off the run for you on Saturday morning.

Thank you Mikala Whitaker for post-run drinks this week! We need a volunteer to cover post-run drinks for the last two weeks of the year, 12/21 and 12/28, and then for February and beyond, so please let me know when you can help. The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up to date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For general info on how volunteering works see the SLR FAQ or send me an email if you have any other specific questions.

Happy running,

Mike

SLR November 30 - Four Mile Run Park

Hello Saturday Runners!

Happy Thanksgiving! If you're looking for a post Turkey Trot (see below for more TT info) on Saturday the 30th, this week we'll be going 11.5 miles to Four Mile Run Park (downloads: cue sheet and GPS).

We will need more volunteers for post-run drinks starting in only two weeks, so please let me know when you can help. I've now posted a full weekly schedule that will take us all the way through the winter and into spring marathon training season. The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up to date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For general info on how volunteering works see the SLR FAQ or send me an email if you have any other specific questions.

One last reminder: Tomorrow, DCRR and the Del Rey Business Association will be holding the 44th annual Alexandria Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning, November 28, at 9:00 am. This five mile race is one of our club's biggest events of the year, so start your turkey early on Thanksgiving morning and then head over to George Washington Middle School in Del Rey to either run or volunteer. As the region's premier Turkey Trot, the totally flat course will be equally friendly to elite level competition, PR chasing, strollers, families, dogs, and costumes! For more info and registration, please go to alexandriaturkeytrot.com.

Happy running,

Mike

SLR November 23 - Glover - Soapstone - Rock Creek

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday on November 23, our route will be the 14 mile loop Glover - Soapstone - Rock Creek (downloads: cue sheet and GPS). We have a little bit of rain in the forecast on Friday midday, and then some more Saturday afternoon, but hopefully things will remian dry enough on Saturday morning to run the trails on this route. The lower entrance to the Glover - Archbold trail is probably still closed, so if so you can enter the trail by going up Foxhall Rd to take a right on 44th St NW, and then a right on P St NW, which will end at an entrance to the trail.

Thank you Eiko Sato for our post-run drinks this week! The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up to date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For general info on how volunteering works see the SLR FAQ or send me an email if you have any other specific questions.

Coming up next week, DCRR and the Del Rey Business Association will be holding the 44th annual Alexandria Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving morning, November 28, at 9:00 am.
