Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.
Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.
We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.
All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!
For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

Saturday Runners,
On a few occasions recently, we've had some problems with trash being left in North Meade Street park on Saturday mornings after our group run. To avoid any issues with continuing to meet at this location, I'd ask that each of you please pay closer attention and make sure nothing is left behind. Cleanup of the post-run beverages after we're finished is the responsibility of each week's volunteer (or the next week's volunteer, if there's a bin handoff), but if everyone helps keep things in order, hopefully this won't be a problem again in the future. If you're leaving SLR and see any trash left behind after the bins have been taken away, pelase help pick things up and leave North Meade Street Park at least as clean and litter-free as we find it each week.
Happy running!
Mike
Hello Saturday Runners!
The route this week will be everyone's favorite Big Loop (additional map here), covering 23 miles to give you your longest run of the marathon prep season. To cut it shorter, I'd recommend an out & back run on the Capital Crescent Trail going as far as you'd like. All of the reports we've gotten recently are that the Beach Drive closures do not (yet at least) impact running in Rock Creek Park, so the route will go on this week as planned. Saturday morning is looking like it might have some hurricane-leftovers rain, so be prepared! If you're running Chicago, Steamtown, Twin Cities, or any other races this weekend instead of SLR, good luck and have fun! Unfortunately I won't be able to make it to this week's run, but Coach Kathy will start things off for you on Saturday morning (at 8:00 am).
Thank you Rachel Grocock for post-run drinks, and Shelley Morris for mid-run drinks! This week's mid-run drinks will be located at the Rock Creek trailhead just before you get onto Beach Drive, at about 12.5 miles into the route. If you're not running far enough to make it to the mid-run drinks, there are water fountains on the Capital Crescent Trail (roughly 3, 5, and 8 miles from our start point) that you can use in both directions during an out & back run. This week will be our last one with organized mid-run drinks until next summer, so starting next week you'll need to plan for carrying extra fluids if necessary.
We have post-run drinks covered for the next two weeks, but starting at the end of October we will need a few more volunteers to help bridge the gap until the next marathon training program (targeting Rock & Roll DC) gets going. Up-to-date volunteer needs and a route schedule are always posted on our web page, and you can email me any time to schedule your slot. Post-run drinks are entirely volunteer supported, so if you regularly enjoy this SLR perk, please do your part to keep it going! Volunteering is easy, doesn't take a lot of time, and all restocking expenses will be reimbursed by the club.
Happy running!

Hello Saturday Runners!
Don't forget that this Saturday we will be shifting our meeting time one hour back, to 8:00 am until next summer. Enjoy the extra hour of sleep, and the cooler weather coming this fall!
This week's run, on October 1, is Arlington Triangle (additional map here), a 16 mile loop around the major shared run/bike paths of Arlington. For a longer run, you can extend this route by adding out & back mileage on the W&OD trail before returning on Custis. To shorten it to less than 16 miles, you can either turn it into a direct out & back, or veer off onto our Four Mile Run Park route for 11 miles. The weather forecast is looking wet on Saturday morning, so make sure you have your DC Road Runners hat to keep the rain out of your eyes!
Thank you Jenn Barton for post-run drinks, and Eileen Basso for mid-run drinks! This week's mid-run drinks will be located at the W&OD trailhead in Shirlington, just after the end of the Four Mile Run trail, at about 7 miles into the route. Though it seems too soon to be thinking about it, our Marathon Training Program for spring races (target to DC Rock n Roll) will begin on November 19, so I've planned a few routes to bridge the gap after MCM, which are now posted on our schedule and open for post-run volunteers.
Up-to-date volunteer needs and a route schedule are always posted on our web page, and you can email me any time to schedule your slot. Our drinks are entirely volunteer provided, so if you're an SLR regular, please do your part to help support them!
Happy running!
Mike
