Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR Oct 19 - 4 Mile Run Park to Pentagon

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturay, Oct 19th, we will be running the 4 Mile Run Park to Pentagon Route, listed at about 11 miles.  This should be a good distance for your final long run before Marine Corps Marathon.  If you need more, continue to Roosevelt Island (now open!) and back through Rosslyn for an extra couple of miles.

Thank you to Flora Arabo for our Post-Run Drinks!!  We are in need of Drink Volunteers for November and December.  Please consider volunteering especially if you have not done drinks before.  Its not a lot of work and the club reimburses your expenses - email SLR@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.

I have posted SLR routes through Mid-December on the SLR webpage - we will be dialing back the mileage a bit after marathon season before we ramp up again for spring races.

In club news: We NEED volunteers for the DC Roadrunners Club water stop at Marine Corps Marathon! Come support your fellow runners and the local running community while getting our club name out there.  Please email volunteer@dcroadrunners.org for more info!

We are also having a Fall Happy Hour to celebrate the season and congratulate all of our fall racers! Meet us at Hill Country for free food, good drinks, and lots of fun! At Hill Country Barbecue, 410 7th St. NW (Chinatown), on: Thursday October 31, 6-9 p.m. Contact mary@dcroadrunners.org with questions.

Yay! The Government is back open! for now...

Happy Running!

SLR Oct 12 - Marine Corp Marathon Mock Route

Hello Runners!

This Saturday, Oct 12th, we will be running the Marine Corp Marathon Mock route, listed at about 16 miles.  This should get you in the mood for the big race coming up!  Or if you aren't running McM this year its still a nice route on its own.

Thank you to Maureen Atkins for our post-run drinks! As always we could use volunteers for the coming months.  Email SLR@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out!

Check the map and cue sheet for details.  Its 16 miles on its own, but easily cut down to 13 miles - at about mile 9.75 once you are close to the Washington Monument, skip the run up to the Capital Building by heading back to the 14th Street Bridge.  This cuts off 3 miles.  You can also cut off 3 miles earlier in the run by skipping Hains Point.

As far as shutdown stuff goes, I'm hoping we will not be affected.  Parts of the Mall that may be closed can be avoided by taking sidewalks.  Don't count on any water fountains being on, not that we will need them too badly, things should be cool and cloudy out.

Run Happy!

- Erik

SLR Oct 5 - Cap Crescent to Rock Creek BIG Loop

Hello Runners!

This Saturday, Oct 5th, we will be running the Capital Crescent to Rock Creak BIG loop - clockwise in direction - its over 22 miles.  So this means heading south on Mt. Vernon, past DCA, and onto 4 Mile Run First. This ensures plenty of water fountains and downhill running on the Custis Trail at the end of the run when it will be warmer out. Route is approx. 16 miles in length. I will be out of town but have a sub starting things off.  This is a great final LSD (long, slow, distance) run for anyone running Marine Corps Marathon in 3 weeks.

Thank you to Angela Katson for post-run drinks!  We could always use additional drink volunteers - the next few months of post-run drinks are wide open. Its not a lot of work and the club reimburses your expenses.  Check the SLR Webpage for dates of need - email SLR@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out!

There will be plenty of opportunities for water along the route as well.  Look at the bottom of the cue sheet for listings.
