Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR Jan 4 - National Capital

Happy New Year Saturday Runners!

This Sat, Jan 4th we will be running the National Capital 12 mile loop!  Please check the map for details.  Please be careful out there, there will no doubt be some ice and snow leftover from Thursday night's storm.  Even if it appears to be clear use caution just in case you hit a slippery spot!

Thank you to Richard Rapine for our post-run drinks!  As always we seek volunteers for the upcoming months.  Its not a lot of work and the club reimburses our expenses.  Email SLR@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out!

Dress warm - it should be clear and cold out.

SLR Dec 28 - Battery Kemble Loops

Hello Saturday Runners!

This week we are running the loops of Battery Kemble Route, listed at 16 miles but easily modified for less.  Check the cue sheet for directions and details on modifying the route.

Thank you to Richard Rapine for our post-run drinks!  We could always use additional drink volunteers for SLR.  Its not a lot of work and the club reimburses your expenses.  Email SLR@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out!

Remember that 60 degree weather last week? Yea...me niether! We are back to more seasonal temps for this week.  Should be around 40 when we get started so dress warm, but not too warm!

Happy Running!

SLR Dec 21 - Holiday Festivus Run

Hello Saturady Runners!

This Saturday, Dec 21st we will be running our annual Holiday "Festivus" run through the city!  Please take a look at the map if you need to, as the route makes kind of a figure "8".  Thank you to Paul and Christine Westcott for more great post-run drink work!

Coming up immediately after the run is the SLR "Winter Warmer" brunch at 4 Courts Pub in Courthouse!  Please join us from approx. 10am until noon and enjoy brunch happy hour specials, holiday cheer, conversation with fellow SLR runners, and some free club swag!

The route is about 11 miles as is - if you would like more you can continue on Mt. Vernon trail south (after the Key bridge) and come back via Memorial Bridge for a 13 mile run, or add on loops around Roosevelt Island at 1.25 miles each.

The weather this weekend likes like an early present, with temps predicted in the high 50s Saturday morning!

Happy Running!

-- Erik
