Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR Sept 7 - Cathedral+Clintons (8AM Start Time)

Saturday Runners,

This Sat, Sept. 7th, we will be running the Cathedral + Clintons route. The listed route mileage is 13 miles. You can start enjoying that extra hour of sleep - SLR Start Time is back to 8:00am!!

Please thank Chris Britz and Walter Barret for post-run beverage work this month, and Graham Magill for our mid-run drinks! Drinks volunteers are always appreciated. Right now we still have a few mid-run drink needs open (9/14, 9/28, 10/5) as well as post-run drinks for the coming months. Its not a lot of work and the club reimburses your expenses. Email SLR@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out!

Mileage Options:

11: While on Cleveland Ave, take a left (instead of a right) on 34th street to cut off Cathedral portion. Then left on Massachusetts Ave to rejoin the route. This cuts off a mile (but you'll mis the drink stop...). Then you can also return via Key Bridge to cut off another mile

13: Run route as written, take Rock Creek trail back, and cross Memorial Bridge to return.

15: As you are on your way back on the Rock Creek trail, run up toward the Lincoln Memorial and out Henry Bacon Dr. to run on path next to Constitution Ave, right on 17th Street, past WWII memorial, right on Independence Ave, take that back to Memorial Bridge; this adds 2 miles.

In club news:

Already conquered the Marathon? Trying to improve your trail running? Want to run an Ultra-Marathon? Then come join us as we train on the trails around D.C. this Fall with a unique 4 part Trail Running Workshop. We will have distances from newbie to hardcore trail runner.  This can also up your endurance for road marathons.

Are you feeling fast and trying to get even faster? Check out the High Performance Training Group! This group is intended for club members with several years of racing experience who want to take their running to the next level. Consistency, structure, and avoiding injury will be emphasized.

Participation in both programs is free to club members!

Run Strong - Now and Forever.

SLR Aug 31 - Rock Creek Park

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday, August 31st (wow - Labor Day Weekend already?!), we will be running the Rock Creek Park out and back route. I put down 18 miles for folks in Marathon training, but since its an out and back you can do as you please. This is nice since it allows for people to go long or short.  I will be out of town at a race but have a sub starting things off.

Please thank Chris Britz and Walter Barret for excellent post-run beverage work, and Maureen Atkins for our mid-run drinks. As always we seek volunteers for post-run and mid-run beverages in the coming months (still a few dates that need to be filled). Its not a lot of work and DCRRC reimburses your expenses. Email SLR@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.

SLR is keeping the post-run brunch tradition alive this weekend if anyone is hungry.  Members will be meeting at Ireland's 4 Courts Pub in Courthouse following the run for food, drinks, and friendship.

Approx. Mileage Options (turn around spots):

10: At 5 miles out, trail passes Zoo entrances, water/bathrooms ~50ft inside.

13: At 6.5 miles out is Pierce Mill, water/bathrooms here too.

16.6: At 8.3 miles out is Park Ranger Station. Might be water across the street.

20: At 10 miles out is Sherrill Drive NW (on right), turn around for a 20 mile long run! Keep going for even more!

Enjoy these cooler late summer temps and Run Happy!!

SLR Aug 24 - Battery Kemble Loops

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday, August 24th we will be running the Loops of Battery Kemble route, listed at 16 miles (but easily modified for more or less).  I'll be out but have a sub starting things off.

Please give a big thank you to Eunja Rau for our post-run drinks, and to Paul and Christine Westcott for mid-run drinks this weekend. As always we seek drink volunteers for the coming months.  Drinks are in pretty good shape but there are still a few mid-run drink dates that need volunteers.  Its not a lot of work and DCRRC reimburses your expenses. Email slr@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.

If you wish to modify the route:

  • Don't run any loops, turn around when you get to the base on Chain Bridge Road and come back, makes it 13.5 miles total.
  • Only run one loop around Battery Kemble, makes it 14.75 miles total.
  • Run two loops through Battery Kemble park for the 16 mile run.
  • Each loop is 1.25 miles, so you can add more loops for more miles.

Wow, those Fall Marathons are starting to creep up... will you be ready?!
