Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR Aug 17 - Glover to Rock Creek (Tilden)

Hello Saturady Runners!!

This Saturday we will be running the Glover to Rock Creek via Tilden Route, listed at 14 miles.  Rumor has it that there may be construction going on at some points within Glover Archbold park so please keep an eye out and be careful.

Thank you to Eunja Rau for our post-run drinks, and to Matt Chesnes for our mid-run drinks! Drink volunteers are always appreciated, we still need a few more mid-run drink volunteers to keep us hydrated as so many members train for their fall marathons!  Email SLR@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.

New SLR routes are posted on the SLR Webpage through mid-October!  I know all you marathoners are super excited about those 18-22 mile long runs you've got on your schedules!

Whats that? Love that trail running we do through Glover Archbold Park? Then check out the DC Road Runners Fall trail running and ultra training workshop! This 4 part series will work in conjuction with SLR and will be a great chance to run a 50k, train for the JFK 50 Miler, or just get more comfortable with trail running in general. Email SLR@dcroadrunners.org for more info, check under Programs > Trail Running Workshop on the website, or just stay tuned for more details!

Hope you are enjoying this fantastic and unseasonably dry weather!

SLR Aug 10 - Upton Hill Alt Route

Hello Saturady Runners!!

This Saturday we will be deviating slightly from the standard Upton Hill Route to reach mid-run drinks (details to follow), still getting in 11 - 15 miles of running (or more if you wish).  The heat, and more importantly the humidity are back so you will definitely want those mid-run drinks!

Instead of turning right to get to Upton Hill, stay on the Custis Trail as it passes under I-66, turn right, then quickly turn left onto the W&OD Trail.  The mid-run drinks will be in Bluemont Park about another mile out.  Turning around there gets you 11 miles.  Continue out to where the trail goes under Carlin Springs Road and turn around for a 12 mile run.  If you take it down to where the trail hits Columbia Pike (7.5 miles out) and come back you'll be getting a 15 mile run.  Lots of water fountains along this route too in case you get thirsty!

Thank you to Maureen Atkins for our post-run drinks, and to Jennifer Zielinski for our mid-run drinks! Drink volunteers are always appreciated, we still have a few more mid-run drink dates as well as post-run drinks for September open.  Email SLR@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.

In club news, the 2013 Cross Country 3 miler and Club Picnic will be held Sunday, so come out for a great race, food and friendship!

Also coming to a trail near you:  the DC Road Runners Fall trail running and ultra training workshop! This 5 part series will work in conjuction with SLR and will be a great chance to run a 50k, train for the JFK 50 Miler, or just get more comfortable with trail running in general.  Email SLR@dcroadrunners.org for more info, check under Programs > Trail Running Workshop on the website, or just stay tuned for more details!

Now go carbo-load friday so you can go get that endurance through the roof at SLR!

SLR Aug 3 - Piney Branch

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Sat, August 3rd (wow, its August already?!), we will be running the Piney Branch loop listed at 14 miles. Check the cue sheet and map for directions.  It won't be super hot but the humidity will be back so please take it easy out there and stop at water fountains if you need to. I'll be out at a race but have a sub starting things off.

Please thank Maureen Atkins for our post-run drinks, and Adam Hanzalik will be providing our mid-run drinks! Additional drink volunteers are always appreciated - its not a lot of work and the club reimburses your expenses. Email slr@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out. All the needs are posted on the SLR website; we still need post-run and mid-run drink volunteers for August and September.

Route is 14 miles as-is.

To lengthen it, you can come back via Memorial Bridge (instead of Key Bridge), this should add about 1.5 miles.

To shorten, you'll probably just have to make it an out and back.  If you turn around on the bridge that passes over Piney Branch and head back this makes it an 11 mile run.

Run Strong and stay Cool!
