Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.
Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.
We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.
All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

Hello Saturday Runners!
I hope everyone has been getting out and about in the excellent Fall-like mornings we've had this week! Our route on Saturday, September 19, will be Battery Kemble Loops for about 16 miles (additional map here). You can shorten the route to 14 miles by running everything as written on the cue sheet, except skipping the two loops of Battery Kemble park. To shorten the route further, simply turn around and retrace your steps when you've reached half your desired distance. Extra mileage beyond 16 can be added either with additional loops of Battery Kemble park, or extra out-and-back distance on the Captial Crescent Trail.
Thank you Rodney Ast for post-run beverages, and thanks also to Rory Quirk for our mid-run beverage station! We are in need of post-run volunteers starting on October 3, and mid-run volunteers for two Saturdays in October, so take a look at our up to date schedule posted on the SLR page and let me know if you can cover either of these. As always, you can email me any dates you'd like to do mid-run drinks, or at least 2 consecutive weeks (preferably 4 weeks) for post-run drinks - all beverage expenses will be reimbursed by the club. Please volunteer; it's your duty if you regularly participate in SLR!
Happy running!

Hello Saturday Runners!
On Saturday September 12, we have a 20-miler planned on the Custis and W&OD trails (additional map here). Because this is an out & back route, it will be easy to modify the distance to fit your own training plans, if you don't have a 20 mile run scheduled for this week. The turn-around point for 20 miles is just beyond the Beltway, at mile marker 9 on the W&OD trail, but you can make this route as long or as short as you like. To reach the mid-run beverage stop, you'll need to go at least 12 miles, since it will be about 6 miles from the start in Benjamin Banneker Park, at the side of the W&OD trail near the soccer field. I'll be out of town this weekend, but Dylan Barlett will be filling in for me on Saturday morning.
Please note that even though it is after Labor Day, we will continue to meet at 7:00 am until further notice. I'm planning to switch back to 8:00 am sometime in early to mid October, after the weather has hopefully made a more decisive shift to cooler temperatures. When the time comes, this will be announced here in the weekly email, as well as posted on the main SLR page and the club's Facebook/Twitter feed.
Thank you Dan Lesmez for post-run beverages, and thank you Rodney Ast for our mid-run beverage station! We are in need of post-run volunteers starting next week, and mid-run volunteers for two Saturdays in October, so take a look at our up to date schedule posted on the SLR page and let me know if you can cover either of these. As always, you can email me any dates you'd like to do mid-run drinks, or at least 2 consecutive weeks (preferably 4 weeks) for post-run drinks - all beverage expenses will be reimbursed by the club. Hello Saturday Runners!
On Saturday September 5, we will be running 16 miles on the MCM Mock Route (additional map here). If you're running the Marine Corps Marathon this fall, this is a great chance to get a preview of what's in store for you on October 25! Please note that the 2015 race route is slightly different than the 2012 route linked on our mock route description page, but you can review an interactive map of this year's route here.
If you'd like to go for a longer distance while making your run even more like the race route, add an out & back section on Lee Hwy (to Adams St) and/or Rock Creek Park Trail (to the first creek crossing footbridge). Each one of these will add about 2 miles, so if you do both the route will be 20 miles according to this map. If you only do one of the two for 18 miles, I'd recommend doing the Lee Hwy out & back, which gives you a chance to run up and down the biggest hill anywhere on the MCM course. To shorten the route, I'd recommend less distance on the Mall - if you skip these sections entirely and go directly from Hains Point back to the start, the distance will be about 10.5 miles.
Thank you Dan Lesmez for post-run beverages this week! We are in need of mid-run volunteers for both this week and next week, and post-run volunteers starting Sept 19, so take a look at our up to date schedule posted on the SLR page and let me know if you can cover either of these.
