Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR November 14 - Glover - Tilden - Rock Creek

Hello Saturday Runners!

Our route on Saturday, November 14, will be 13 miles following Glover - Tilden - Rock Creek (additional map here). For 10 miles you can turn around at Van Ness St and make it an out & back on the Glover-Archbold trail, or to add distance you can run however much extra you'd like on any of the C&O Towpath, Rock Creek, or Mt. Vernon trails that this route passes. Choosing a bridge other than Memorial Bridge for your return from DC to VA can also either add or cut a few miles.

I won't be at SLR this weekend, but Andrew Simpson is going to be filling in for me. Enjoy the nice cool fall weather that's supposed to be in town on Saturday morning!

Thank you Joe Buccino for post-run beverages! Our scheudle of upcoming routes and volunteer needs is now posted through the end of the year on the SLR page so please let me know when you can help out, and email me with at least 2 consecutive weeks (preferably 4 weeks). Volunteering is easy, a great way to win points with your SLR friends, and all beverage expenses will be reimbursed by the club.

Happy running!

Mike

SLR November 7 - Bluemont L-Loop

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday, November 7, will feature a new route that I'm adding to our rotation! I'm calling this 12 mile route the Bluemont L-Loop (map here). If you're an SLR regular, most areas this route covers should be familar to you, but I'd recommend you take a look at the map anyway to orient yourself. To shorten the route, you can cut off the short leg of the "L" at the end, and head directly from Rosslyn back to Iwo Jima, which should be about 10 miles. The route can be lengthened any amount along either the W&OD or Mt. Vernon trails, or by doing laps of the Roosevelt Island trail (maybe not recommended in the wet weather that's forecast for Saturday though).

Thanks go to Joe Buccino for post-run beverages! Our scheudle of upcoming routes and volunteer needs is posted on the SLR page so please let me know when you can help out, and email me with at least 2 consecutive weeks (preferably 4 weeks). Volunteering is easy, much appreciated by your SLR cohort, and all beverage expenses will be reimbursed by the club.

Happy running!

Mike

SLR October 31 - Four Mile Run Park

Hello Saturday Runners!

I hope everyone is recovering well from MCM last weekend, but for those of you who were not running last Sunday, on Saturday October 31 we will be running the Four Mile Run Park (additional map here) route for 11.5 miles. To lengthen this route, you can get 13 miles by continuting to Roosevelt Island on your way back, or to shorten the run you can simply go for an out & back on the Mt. Vernon Trail.

I'm going to be out of town this weekend, but Andrew Simpson will be there to start the run for you.

Thanks go to Joe Buccino for post-run beverages! Our scheudle of upcoming routes and volunteer needs is now posted through the end of the year on the SLR page so please let me know when you can help out, and email me with at least 2 consecutive weeks (preferably 4 weeks). Volunteering is easy, much appreciated by your SLR cohort, and all beverage expenses will be reimbursed by the club.

Happy running!

Mike
