Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

SLR August 4 - Battery Kemble Loops

Hello Saturday Runners!

On August 4, our route will be Battery Kemble Loops (downloads: cue sheet and GPS) for 16 miles. If you'd like less than 16 miles, you can cut it down to 14 by running only to the base of Battery Kemble Park, and heading back to the start instead of running loops up and down the trail. For distance beyond 16, you can add as much as you like on the Capital Crescent Trail. Loops of Battery Kemble Park contain a trail section, and while the forecast on Saturday morning should be clear, there will have been a lot of rain on Thursday and Friday. If the trail is too soggy, you can run loops on the road instead going Chain Bridge - Nebraska - Foxhall - Garfield - 49th - Ashby. That sounds complicated but it's not so bad if you look at it on the map - except for a couple places, it's just all the right turns you can take.

Thanks this week go to Don Junta for post-run drinks, and Kate Scott for mid-run drinks! Mid-run drinks will be at 7 miles, at the base of Battery Kemble park, near the intersection of MacArthur Blvd and Chain Bridge Rd.

We're now actually in good shape with volunteers for the next couple weeks, but will need more help in September and beyond for both post-run drinks and mid-run drinks, so please let me know if you can help with either of these. The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For more info on how volunteering works, please first see the SLR FAQ, and after that send me an email if you'd like any additional details.

Happy running,

Mike

SLR July 28 - Marymount Chain Bridge

Hello Saturday Runners!

This week's route on July 28 will be the 14 mile loop to Marymount Chain Bridge (downloads: cue sheet and GPS). You can shorten this route to 12 miles by returning over the Key Bridge instead of Memorial Bridge, or further shorten it to 10 miles by continuing straight on Military Rd all the way to Old Glebe Rd in addition to returning on the Key Bridge. For going beyond 14, you'll wind up on the C&O Canal Towpath in the second half, where you can add on practically unlimited flat(ish) miles. It looks like we have a chance of rain on Saturday morning, but that should be no surprise with how things have been going lately, so gear up and I'll see you at SLR!

Thank you Don Junta for post-run drinks this week, and Lindsey Wray for mid-run drinks! Mid-run drinks will be located about 6.5 miles into the route, on N Old Glebe Rd near Fort Ethan Allen Park.

Mike

SLR July 21 - Southeast DC

Hello Saturday Runners!

Our route this week is 13 miles along the Southeast DC loop (downloads: cue sheet and GPS). If you'd like to shorten the run while still starting off along the same route as the group, one way to do this is to hop onto the Metro back to Rosslyn. You can choose between a couple stops along the way - Potomac Ave is at about 8 miles, or Smithsonian is at about 10.5 miles. Both Coach Jonny and I are out of town this week, but you're in good hands this week with Coach Big Guy who will be there to kick off the run!

Thank you Bobby Beasley for post-run drinks this week, and Shawn & Katherine Zeller for mid-run drinks! This week's mid-run drinks will be located on Anacostia Dr. near the rec center, at about 7 miles into the run.

We are in need of more volunteers in September and beyond for post-run drinks as well as mid-run drinks for a number of weeks throughout the saeason, so please let me know if you can help with either of these. The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For more info on how volunteering works, please first see the SLR FAQ, and after that send me an email if you'd like any additional details.

Happy running,

Mike
