Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.
Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.
We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.
All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

Hello Saturday Runners!
This week's route, on Saturday May 12, will be a 13.5 mile one-way run to the Vienna Metro (downloads: cue sheet and GPS). If you'd like to do something similar while going a little shorter, you can make it an 11 mile trip to the Dunn Loring metro if you continue straight on Gallows Rd instead of turning at Cottage St. For those of you who make it all the way out to Vienna, look for Raj with remote post-run drinks at the bike stand just before the metro entrance. If that spot doesn't work out for whatever reason, he'll be in the parking lot near the kiss & ride location. Be sure to thank him for the drinks, and don't forget to bring your SmarTrip card for the ride back to Rosslyn!
Thanks also to Franco Ordonez for bringing post-run drinks at the regular SLR meeting point this week, and in addition for starting off the run in my place while I'm out of town!
We will need more volunteers for both post-run and mid-run drinks coming up in June, so please get in touch with me if you can help. The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For more info on how volunteering works, please first see the SLR FAQ, and after that send me an email if you'd like any additional details.
Early warning: Beginning in three weeks, on June 2, our meeting time will be moving up to 7:00 am for the summer months, to beat the heat
Happy running,
Mike
Hello Saturday Runners!
This week's scheduled route is 11 miles of trail running along the Potomac Heritage Trail (downloads: cue sheet and GPS). The forecast for Saturday is currently calling for rain, with increasing likelihood in the late morning and early afternoon. Since this route is almost entirely trails, I'm going to keep an eye on the weather and possibly call a last-minute route change if it looks like things will be too wet and muddy. If that becomes necessary, I'll be recommending an out & back run on the Capital Crescent Trail instead. Hopefully the weather holds out though, because this route is one we have not run at SLR in recent years, and should be a fun change of pace! The Potomac Heritage Trail can be steep and rocky in some places, including creek crossings as well, so even if we have good weather, be sure to watch your footing and slow down as needed.
Thank you Franco Ordonez for post-run drinks! We will need more volunteers for both post-run and mid-run drinks coming up in June, so please get in touch with me if you can help. The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. Happy running,
Mike
Hello Saturday Runners!
This week's run will be the 14 mile loop Glover - Soapstone - Rock Creek (downloads: cue sheet and GPS). Construction is underway at the south end of the Glover-Archbold trail, so to get on the trail you should follow a minor detour. After coming up onto Canal Rd after the tunnel, continue past the regular trail entrance, and up Foxhall Rd to the right. Turn right on 44th St NW and then right on P St NW, which will end at an entrance to the trail. From that point on, you can follow the route as mapped. I'm going to be out of town this weekend, but Dan Lesmez will be there to kick things on on what should be a perfect spring morning with the sun out and temperature in the low 50s!
Thank you Franco Ordonez for post-run drinks! We will need more volunteers for the end of May and beyond, as well as mid-run drinks coming up in June, so please get in touch with me if you can help. The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For more info on how volunteering works, please first see the SLR FAQ, and after that send me an email if you'd like any additional details.
Happy running,
Mike
