Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR June 23 - Rock Creek Park

Hello Saturday Runners!

Though you've probably seen the jump-start program with us for the last few weeks, this Saturday 6/23 is the beginning of the club's official marathon training program targeting MCM - please welcome the newcomers you'll be running with! This week's route is out & back on the Rock Creek Park trail (downloads: cue sheet and GPS), for a recommended distance of 10 miles at the beginning of the training program. As this is an out & back route, it's easy to add or subtract any amount of distance that you'd like by picking your own turn-around point. To get 10 miles, you'll be turning around at approximately the lower entrance to the Zoo.

Thanks go to James Sledge for post-run drinks this week! Ted Logothetti will be providing mid-run drinks as well, located at the intersection of Rock Creek Pkwy and Virginia Ave, so you'll get a chance to stop at both 2.5 mi and 7.5 mi if you're going for 10 miles total.

We are in need of more volunteers in August and beyond for post-run drinks as well as mid-run drinks after next week, so please let me know if you can help with either of these. The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For more info on how volunteering works, please first see the SLR FAQ, and after that send me an email if you'd like any additional details.

Happy running,

Mike

SLR June 16 - National Capitol

Hello Saturday Runners!

This week's run on Saturday, June 16 will be 12 miles to the National Capitol (downloads: cue sheet and GPS). If you'd like to shorten the run, you can make it about 10 miles by returning over Memorial Bridge (the same as on your way out) rather than going down to the 14th St Bridge. I'm out of town this weekend, but Coach Jonny will be there to get things going for both you and the marathon training program jump-start on what looks to be a beautiful morning for a run!

Thank you Shawna Barry for post-run drinks the past couple weeks! We unfortunately do not have a volunteer for mid-run drinks this week, so please make sure to carry your own fluids for this run or make use of the water fountains along the Mall.

Mike

SLR June 9 - MacArthur Loop

Hello Saturday Runners!

Don't forget that since last week we have started meeting at 7:00 am for the summer!

On Saturday, June 9, our route will be the 13 mile MacArthur Loop (downloads: cue sheet and GPS). If you'd rather go for a shorter run, I'd recommend simply running out & back on the Capital Crescent Trail where we'll be starting out. It's going to be warm and humid tomorrow morning, but hopefully the rain will hold out until later in the day... Get ready to run up some hills on this one!

Thanks this week go to Shawna for post-run drinks and Liz for mid-run drinks, which will be located on 49th St NW, roughly 7.5 miles into the route. We are in need of more volunteers in July and beyond for post-run drinks as well as mid-run drinks starting next week, so please let me know right away if you can help with this. The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For more info on how volunteering works, please first see the SLR FAQ, and after that send me an email if you'd like any additional details.

Happy running,

Mike
