Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR June 17 - Rock Creek Park

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday, on June 17, our route will be out & back along the Rock Creek Park Trail (downloads: cue sheet and gpx). This week is the kick-off of the Marathon Training Program which will be meeting concurrently with us over the summer, and so the recommended distance for those who are beginning that training program is 10 miles. You can easily adjust the distance on this route though, but simply turning around whenever you reach your own halfway point. While we typically do run rain or shine, there are thunderstorms in the forecast for Saturday, and in the event of active thunder and lightning the group run will be cancelled. If no cancellation notice is posted on the club's facebook, twitter, or SLR page, then the run is expected to go on as planned, as long as the conditions remain safe.

I'm not going to be at SLR this week, but Brian Danza will be there in my place to help kick off the run, along with the MTP coaches.

Thank you Elizabeth Kelley providing post-run drinks this week! Please note that there will not be mid-run drinks this weekend, due to lack of a volunteer. I've been getting a great response lately on post-run volunteers, but we'll need a lot more people to step up for mid-run drinks this summer!

Volunteer needs along with the weekly route & distance schedule are always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to schedule your slot. Post-run volunteers are typically scheduled for at least 2 consecutive weeks to cut down on handoffs of the bins, while mid-run drinks can be booked on a week by week basis. SLR drinks are entirely volunteer supported, so if you regularly enjoy this perk, do your part to keep it going! Volunteering is easy, doesn't take a lot of time, and all restocking expenses will be reimbursed by the club.

Happy running!

Mike

SLR June 10 - Potomac Overlook Loops

Hello Saturday Runners!

One more reminder: Since last week, we are now meeting one hour earlier at 7:00 am for the summer!

This week's route on June 10 will be 12 miles, out to some trail running at Potomac Overlook Loops (downloads: cue sheet and gpx). The as-written route is 12 miles with 4 loops of the park, but you can add or subtract distance by doing a different number of loops. Each loop is 1.2 miles, so just running out and back to the park will be about 7 miles. Temperatures will be warming up over this weekend, but it should still be comfortable running in the 60s on Saturday morning!

Mid-run drinks this week will be at the Potomac Overlook Park gazebo near the tennis courts, provided by Rich Mendelowitz, with Elizabeth Kelley covering post-run drinks. Please thank our volunteers for helping to keep you hydrated! There are still lots of opportunities to volunteer for mid-run drinks this summer, as well as post-run drinks later in the season, so please take a look at how you can help out.

SLR New Features

Saturday Runners,

In addition to our regularly scheduled weekly update, I want to point out a few nice new features on our website that are now available, and will hopefully be useful to you. If you've checked out the SLR Homepage recently, you may have noticed a few subtle changes...

In addition to our legacy route descriptions, and the refreshed MilerMeter maps that accompany each one, the upcoming schedule now includes downloads for pdf formatted printer-friendly cue sheets, as well as GPS track files in gpx format that you can sync to your watch! These pdf cue sheets are what you get every week when I pass out directions before the run (which I will still continue to do, so no need to bring your own), and the new gpx files can be used (if your GPS watch supports it) to give you mapping and directions right from your wrist! The links above in this paragraph are to examples of each resource for this week's route, Glover - Soapstone - Rock Creek.

Have you been wanting to re-run a previous route from SLR a few months ago, but can't remember exactly where it went? We also now have a full Route Catalog posted, which lists all of the runs that are in rotation for Saturday mornings, with all of this new info for each one!

If you have a Garmin, the easiest way to send one of our routes to your watch is to plug it into your computer via USB, and then manually copy the gpx file to the \Garmin\Newfiles folder after your watch is recognized as a mass storage device. After that, when you're on the "ready to run" screen (just before you'd normally press start), open the menu and select "Navigation", then "Courses", and pick the route that you'd like to use. If your device is non-Garmin, you're on your own to figure it out :) but if you send me similar instructions, I'll post them for everyone's reference.

Happy navigationally-assisted running!

Mike
