Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.
Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.
We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.
All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!
For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

Hello Saturday Runners!
On Saturday, January 28, we will be running the 13 mile MacArthur Blvd Loop (additional map here). This is one of our less frequently used routes, so many of you will not have run it recently or at all, but it's one I really enjoy! It goes through some DC neighborhoods less frequently seen at SLR, and has plenty of rolling hills to keep things interesting! I will have cue sheets on Saturday morning, but a look at the map and directions ahead of time is helpful too. To add about 2 miles to this route, return via Memorial Bridge rather than Key Bridge at the end. For less than 13 miles, after starting with the group, I'd suggest simply running an out & back on the Capital Crescent Trail.
The next upcoming Snowball Series race will be the Langley 8K next week on Saturday February 4. Check the club website for a full series schedule, and links to sign up for either running or volunteering at any of the other races. You can also get series volunteer credit by signing up for at least 2 weeks of SLR post-run drinks!
We also have the DC RRCA Club Challenge Ten Miler coming up on Sunday February 26. Please make sure you are a current club member before registering for this race, as we will be running in the team competition and the club will pay your race registration entry fee. We will also organize a bus for free transportation with your friends, and pickup/drop-off points at Courthouse in Arlington, and Dupont Circle in DC. It's a really fun event, with a challenging (hilly!) race course, and as usual post-race refreshments on the bus!
Coming up on March 5, we will have our Annual Banquet & Membership Meeting at Maggiano's in Friendship Heights. In addition to drinks & dinner, we will be presenting our annual awards, electing the club's 2017 board of directors, and hearing a state of the club presentation. We also have an exciting keynote speaker in Matt Centrowitz, American University head cross country coach, 2-time Olympian, former 5000m American record holder, and father of Matthew Centrowitz Jr. who is the 2016 Olympic gold medalist at 1500m. Pre-registration on the club website is required for this event.
Thank you Franco Ordonez for post-run drinks! Volunteer needs along with the weekly route & distance schedule are always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to schedule your slot. Post-run volunteers are typically scheduled for at least 2 consecutive weeks to cut down on handoffs of the bins, and because it's a relatively easy job. Post-run drinks are entirely volunteer supported, so if you regularly enjoy this SLR perk, do your part to keep it going! Volunteering is easy, doesn't take a lot of time, and all restocking expenses will be reimbursed by the club.
Happy running!
Mike
Hello Saturday Runners!
This week on January 21, we will be running a new route to the King Street Metro (map here), which is about 18 miles. This is a new route I planned out, which we'll be running for the first time - the end of the route is the King Street Metro station in Alexandria, with a ride back to Rosslyn, so don't forget to bring your SmarTrip card! If you'd like to run about 11 miles rather than 18, you can follow the route as planned up to the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, but then instead of heading south for an out & back on the Mt. Vernon Trail, turn right on Washington St. pick up the directions as if you're coming back to the Metro, and ride the blue line back to Rosslyn as planned. If you'd rather not ride the Metro back, I'd recommend just running out & back, and turning around at half of your target distance.
This week's run stays entirely in VA, so there shouldn't be any conflicts with post-inauguration activities, but do remember that there may be any or all of traffic, road closures, and parking shortages on your normal driving routes to or from our meeting point at North Meade St Park.

We currently do not have post-run drinks this week due to lack of volunteers, so please let me know right away if you can help out with this. Hello Saturday Runners!
This week's route will be Upton Hill (additional map here), for an out & back of about 12 miles. For a shorter run, you can turn around at any point earlier to get your target distance (though you'll miss the fun of the big hill at the turnaround!). If you're looking for anything beyond 12 miles, we'll be on the Custis Trail, which you can use to connect to the W&OD Trail and go as long as you like.
For another option to run 12 miles this weekend, the JFK 20K & MLK 5K will also be on Saturday morning. You can sign up to run both races for an extra challenge, but don't forget to register twice (using a different email address for each) if this is your plan. Check the club website for a full Snowball Series schedule, and links to sign up for either running or volunteering at any of the other races. You can also get series volunteer credit by signing up for at least 2 weeks of SLR post-run drinks!
Though it's 65 deg today, there's again some snow in the forecast this Saturday. As long as the current forecast for less than 1 in of accumulation holds out, I don't expect that we will need to cancel SLR, however if you're ever unsure, check the club's facebook page or look for an SLR announcement/email on Saturday morning by about 6:30 am.
We currently do not have post-run drinks for the next two weeks due to lack of volunteers, so please let me know right away if you can help out with this. Volunteer needs along with the weekly route & distance schedule are always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to schedule your slot. Post-run volunteers are typically scheduled for at least 2 consecutive weeks to cut down on handoffs of the bins, and becuase it's a relatively easy job.
