Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR Sept 15 - Custis to W&OD out & back

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Sat, Sep. 15th, we will be running the Custis Trail to W&OD out & back route. This will be a good chance to get your long run in, or you can turn around early for a mid length run. We will continue to meet at 7:00am this Saturday and then switch to 8:00am on 9/22.

Please thank Walter Barret and Liz Tripodi for our post-run drinks!  Janet Townshend will be providing us mid-run drinks so please say thank you to her as well. We still have a few more dates that need mid-run drink volunteers, and we need post-run drink volunteers for October and on - please email slr@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.

Mileage Options (turn around points):

14: 7 miles out to just beyond Lee Highway crossing (W&OD Mile Marker 6)

16: 8 miles out to Rt 7 bridge (W&OD Mile Marker 7)

18: 9 miles out, turn around when you cross Virginia Lane, adjacenet to Shreve Road (Shrevewood Elementary school is on left)

20: 10 miles out to Beltway/ I-495 crossing (W&OD Mile Marker 9)

Several water fountains along this route too.  Its a gradual climb on the way out and then you get to cruise back down at the end! Enjoy!

SLR Sept 8 - Normanstone Hill to Klingle 2 loops

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Sat, Sep. 8th, we will be running the Normanstone Klingle Route, with 2 loops for added miles. The listed route mileage is 17 miles. Please check the cue sheet and map. We will continue to meet at 7:00am this Saturday (9/8) and next week (9/15), and then switch to 8:00am on 9/22.

Please thank Walter Barret and Liz Tripodi for our post-run drinks! We currently don't have anyone on deck for mid-run drinks this Saturday and could really use a volunteer, remember: No Volunteers = No Drinks.  Please remember that this group is member supported, so if you are an SLR regular and haven't volunteered in a while (or ever) please consider helping out your fellow runners - just email slr@dcroadrunners.org - dates of need are on the SLR website.

Mileage Options:

8: In case you are racing Sunday and just need a short, easy run (i.e. me), you can cut it short: after turning left off of Rock Creek trails 4.5 miles in, continue on the dirt/gravel trail through Dumbarton Oaks Park, exit park on Lover's Lane, turn right on R street, left onto Wisconsin Ave, come back through Georgetown and take Key Bridge.

13: Do route exactly as written in cue sheet, taking Rock Creek trails back to Memorial bridge the first time.

17: Do route as written but do a 2nd loop by taking the dirt/gravel trail now on your right,  up Normanstone Hill, down Klingle, and then take Rock Creek trails back to Memorial Bridge.

Happy Running!

SLR Sept 1 - Mt. Vernon Hains Pt "T" Route

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Sat, Sep. 1st, we will be running the Mt. Vernon Hains Point "T" Route. The listed route mileage is 15 miles. Please check the cue sheet and map.  We are still meeting at 7:00am at the small park NW of Iwo Jima.

Please thank Walter Barret and Liz Tripodi for our post-run drinks!  We currently don't have anyone on deck for mid-run drinks this Saturday.  Just to clarify, we would still like to continue having mid-run beverages in Fall, but no one has been volunteering. Please remember that this group is member supported, so if you haven't volunteered in a while (or ever) please consider helping out your fellow runners - dates of need are on the SLR website.  Its not a lot of work and DCRRC reimburses your expenses - email slr@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.

This is one of our flatter routes so a good time to practice your even pacing skills. Might want to bring sunglasses or a hat to keep the sun out of your eyes too. The weather has cooled off a bit but if you get hot there are water fountains on either side of Hains Point, as well as under the Jefferson Memorial.  If you are at all concerned about overheating and dehydration please hit these water fountains and consider carrying bottles with you.

New routes are posted to the SLR Website up through October 27th. The goal being to have a long run of 18-22 miles 3 weeks out from most major marathons, or at least options for a long run.

Mileage Options:

10: While heading south on Mt. Vernon, turn around at Gravelly Point Park (before DCA), then complete Hains Point portion.

14: Do route exactly as written in cue sheet, taking Memorial bridge back.

15: Do route as written but continue on Mt. Vernon trail north, past Roosevelt island, and come back through Rosslyn.

??: For even more, add on loops around Roosevelt Island, each loop being about 1.25 miles.

Happy Running!
