Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR Mar 2 - Glover Mass Ave Cap Crescent Loop

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Sat, March 2nd, we will be running the Glover Archbold/Mass Ave./Capital Crescent Loop. Its about 13.5 miles and has a couple miles of easy trail running through Glover Archbold park before getting back on the roads.

I'll be out of town but Brian will be getting things started.  Please thank Janate Abbate for our post-run drinks! As always we seek drink volunteers for the coming months. Its not a lot of work and DCRRC reimburses your expenses. Email slr@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.

Only a few turns on this one  to remember!  After taking the Key Bridge, run on the Capital Crescent trail for a 1/2 mile then go right through Culvert to run on Glover Archbold trail.  After 2 miles on the trail, the 4th street crossing is Massachusetts Ave. Turn left.  After going 2 miles and passing 2 traffic circles on Mass. Ave., you'll see a little bridge crossing overhead. This the Capital Crescent Trail. Take the ramp on the left up to the trail and go left (south) all the way back to Key Bridge and back to Iwo Jima.

Have fun!

SLR Feb 23 - C&O Canal Towpath out&back

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Sat, Feb 9th, we will be running an out and back on the C&O Canal Towpath. I put down 20 miles for those in Marathon training (specifically anyone running Rock-n-Roll USA in 3 weeks), but obviously feel free to do any distance since its an out and back.

Please thank Johnathon Pelish for our post-run drinks! As always we seek drink volunteers for the coming months. Its not a lot of work and DCRRC reimburses your expenses. Email slr@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.

As far as mileage options go:

  • 10 miles total: run to Mile Marker 5, right before Lock 5, and return
  • 14 miles total: run to Mile Marker 7 and return
  • 16 miles total: run out to MM 8 and return
  • 20 miles total: run all the way out beyond the Beltway/495, to MM 10 and come back. Keep going to MM 11 and come back for 22 miles total.

The mile markers are conveniently situated to match up with the distance traveled from Iwo Jima. In other words, mile marker 3 (near Fletcher's Boathouse) is 3 miles running from Iwo Jima. Note that the mile markers are not all perfectly accurate, so don't count on splits, but general distance is close.

Have fun!

SLR Feb 16 - Cleveland Park + Cathedral + Clintons

Happy Valentines Day Saturday Runners!

This Sat, Feb 16th, we will be running the Cleveland Park + Cathedral + Clintons route.  Its 15.5 miles.  In club news, the GW Birthday Marathon is this Sunday.  So if you aren't running the race, come run SLR and then go volunteer or just cheer at the Marathon Sunday!  The Club Challenge 10 Miler is also coming up next weekend on Sunday, Feb 24th.

Please thank Johnathon Pelish for our post-run drinks! As always we seek drink volunteers for the coming months. Its not a lot of work and DCRRC reimburses your expenses. Email slr@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out - February is half over and we do not have anyone on deck for drinks in March.

The route is actually about 15.5 miles.  Check the cue sheet and map for details.  If you are only looking for 13 miles you can do the standard Cathedral + Clintons route (no Cleveland Park).  You can also take 34th street to cut off another mile from that route too.

I have posted Spring SLR routes through the end of April, targeting the Rock-n-Roll USA Marathon and Half Marathon in D.C., and the Boston Marathon - with a long run 3 weeks out from each race. Give me a shout if there are any other late Spring Marathons you would like me to work into the schedule.

Should be a crisp and cool winter morning!

-- Erik
