Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.
Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.
We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.
All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!
For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.
To receive weekly SLR updates via email, please log in and check your email subscriptions.

Please thank Rich Mendelowitz and Chris Britz for our post-run Beverages, and thank you to Dave Gewertz for mid-run drinks. Fall months are open for post-run beverage volunteers - please email slr@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.
New routes are posted to the SLR Website up through October 27th. The goal being to have a long run of 18-22 miles 3 weeks out from most major marathons, or at least options for a long run. Marine Corp. Marathon is the biggest draw, but we have club members running Chicago, Baltimore, Richmond, New York, Philly (and a few others).
Directions: Everyone should be pretty familiar with the route but double check the cue sheet if you have any doubts!
Mileage Options:
13: Run route as written, take Rock Creek trail back, stay right and cross Memorial Bridge to return
15: As you are on your way back on the Rock Creek trail, run up toward the Lincoln Memorial and out Henry Bacon Dr. to run on path next to Constitution Ave, right on 17th Street, past WWII memorial, right on Independence Ave, take that back to Memorial Bridge; this adds 2 miles
18: Use the options for the 15 mile route, but continue on Constitution Ave all the way up to the Capital Building reflecting pool, cut right, and take Indepdence Ave back to Memorial bridge; this adds almost 5 miles
Enjoy this club favorite route! Happy Running!

This Sat, Aug. 18th, we will be running a new route, the GWK Shady Route, named for the 3 parks you run through (Glover Archbold, Wesley Heights, and Battery Kemble). The listed route mileage is 17.5 miles, with options for more or less. Check the cue sheet and map for full details. Even though its a "new" route most of these areas should be familiar. Please keep in mind (as with our Glover routes) to please be careful and watch your footing on the trails. Some spots such as creek crossings or steep inclines may even require walking. We continue to meet at the park at 1300 Arlington Blvd. at 7am all summer.
Please thank Rich Mendelowitz and Chris Britz for our post-run Beverages, and Abigail Potter has been nice enough to provide our mid-run drinks. Fall months are open (and fast approaching) for post-run beverage volunteers - please email slr@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.
In other club news, there are plenty of great races coming up, check the DCRRC website and the upcoming events for details - also, with all these great races come volunteer needs!
Directions: Head through Rosslyn, cross Key bridge, go down to the right to get on the C&O Canal Towpath heading West. Take Stairs down; go through creepy tunnel, curl up to the right, then right again to enter Glover Archbold Park. Continue on Glover Trails, crossing Reservoir Road NW and then back on Glover trail. At about 3.2 total miles in, watch for a sign on the left directing you to Battery Kemble Park. Take a left onto this side trail (if you hit New Mexico Ave you have gone too far). Follow side-trail as it crosses a small streambed, up some man-made stairs, and veers right. This will hit 44th Street NW. Cross the street, go a little to the right on this street, then go left to continue on trail. You are now in Wesley Heights Park. Stay on trail following signs to Battery Kemble Park. Careful as some sections are steep. Later cross Foxhall Rd NW and get back on trail. Cross 49th St. NW, now entering Battery Kemble Park. After you cross a small footbridge, trail comes to a "T", go left here. Eventually you will come out of Battery Kemble Park. Turn right onto MacArthur Blvd NW, then a left onto Chain Bridge Road NW (run toward the "No Outlet" sign). Now go right onto the trail from an old Railroad trail-bed. In less than ¼ mile you will pass by the Palisades Recreation Center and Baseball field. Take trail-bed until it ends at Galena Pl NW, go left on this street, up hill, then right on Potomac Ave NW. Great views up here! Take Potomac Ave until it hits the water treatment plant, and take the trail cut through on Left to get down to the Capital Crescent Trail. Go left on Capital Crescent back towards DC (or opt for C&O Canal Towpath if you prefer trail). Pass Fletcher's Boat House. Stay on the trail then start another loop through Glover Park to make it a 17.5 mile run, or head directly back for a 10.5 mile run. Stay on the trail, back to Georgetown, take Key bridge through Rosslyn. Finish.
Water and restrooms available in the Palisades park (next to kids' baseball fields) and then again at Fletcher's Boathouse.
Mileage Options:
Have fun out there! Should be nice weather and easy to stay cool in the shade.

This Sat, Aug. 11th, we will be running the Arlington Triangle Loop, Counter Clock Wise though, so heading up Custis trail first. The listed route mileage is 16.5 miles. Check this gmap-pedometer map for full details.
Please thank Rich Mendelowitz and Chris Britz for our post-run Beverages, and a big thanks to Jenn Zielinski for mid-run drinks. Fall months are open for post-run beverage volunteers (September is right around the corner) - please email slr@dcroadrunners.org if you can help out.
Directions: You know the drill - but just do the loop Counter Clock Wise this time! So, go through Rosslyn, head up Custis trail first (knock that hill out while its still cool), then enjoy a gradual downhill the rest of the run! Take W&OD trail to 4 mile run trail until it hits Mt. Vernon trail near DCA. Take Mt. Vernon trail North toward Memorial bridge, and finish at the park NW of Iwo Jima. Plenty of waterfountains and a few restrooms along the way too.
Mileage Options:
16.5: Take Left on Memorial Bridge (don't run up to Roosevelt Island).
18.25: Continue on Mt. Vernon and do a loop around Roosevelt Island (as detailed in the gmap-pedometer map)
Stay cool, take it easy on the hills, and remember to hit those water fountains before you get thirsty! Happy Running!
