Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR - October 2 - 18 miles

Hi Runners,

The route this week has CHANGED! More rallys/protests are planned this weekend, so we are going to switch to the C&O canal route. The cue sheet and gps links are here.

This route can go pretty much as far as you want, just turn around when you are ready. This will also be nice as people start to taper differently or if your race date just changed (I am so sorry about MCM!). If you were planning to run MCM and haven’t found a new race yet, Richmond (11/13) and Philadelphia (11/21) are both somewhat local!

Thank you Emily and Kenneth for bringing post run drinks again this week! We do not have any volunteers for post run drinks in the coming weeks, please consider volunteering! The club will reimburse you for the drinks if you keep your receipt.

We will continue to meet at 7 AM until after 10/16. We will switch to meeting at 8 AM on 10/23. So see you at 7 AM!

Please be sure to follow CDC guidelines with respect to COVID-19.

Happy running!

Megan

SLR - September 25 - 16 Miles

Hi Runners,

The route this week is the hilly 16 mile Marine Corp Marathon Mock route! The cue sheet and GPS links are here. See you at 7 AM!

This run is perfect if you are gearing up for MCM this fall! But beware, it is 10 miles short of the real route, and totally misses the two parts of the course I found most difficult – the Arlington hill and the Crystal City out and back.

Thank you Emily and Kenneth for bringing post run drinks again this week!

The club DCRR National Capital 20 Miler and 5 Miler is on Sunday 9/26.

Please be sure to follow CDC guidelines with respect to COVID-19.

Happy running!

SLR - September 18 - 13 miles

Hi Runners,

The route this week is the hilly 13 mile Cathedral Clintons route! The cue sheet and GPS links are here. The mid run drinks (thank you Kate K!) will be at about mile 7.5 just outside of Dumbarton Oaks Park on Whitehaven Street NW.

Thank you Christie and Rodrigo for bringing post run drinks again this week! We do not have post run drinks volunteers going forward. Please consider volunteering – DCRR will reimburse you the cost of the drinks if you fill out the reimbursement form – we just need help getting them to and from our meeting location.

The next club race is the final race in the Bunion Derby series. It is the DCRRC Women's Distance Festival 5K and Run After the Women 5K on the same morning as this SLR. There is also the club DCRR National Capital 20 Miler and 5 Miler on 9/26.

Please be sure to follow CDC guidelines with respect to COVID-19.

Happy running!

Megan
