Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.
Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.
We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.
All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!
For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

Hello Saturday Runners!
This week on September 21, we will be running the 14.5 mile Ross Drive route (downloads: cue sheet and GPS). If you'd like to either shorten or lengthen the route, you can either add or remove 3.5 miles by skipping or adding a second loop of Beach Drive to Ross Drive. Though it will heat up some later in the day, we're finally getting a taste of fall this Saturday morning with sunny skies, dew point in the 50s, and morning temperature around 60 - so it should be a great day for a long run on my personal favorite of the many SLR routes we have in rotation!
Thanks this week to Kyle Edgerton for post-run drinks, and Matt Hoffman for mid-run drinks! Mid-run drinks will be located at Pierce Mill, which you'll pass twice at about 5 and 9.5 miles. We're now completely covered for drinks through all runs currently on the schedule, so thanks to all the volunteers! If you can help with post-run drinks in November and beyond, please feel free to send me an email to pre-claim your slot before I post an extended schedule. The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For general info on how volunteering works see the SLR FAQ or send me an email if you have any other specific questions.
Coming up next week on 9/29, DCRRC will be putting on the National Capital 20 Miler and 5 Miler races. This is a great tune-up race for fall marathons, and your last opportunity to volunteer for the Bunion Derby. For complete info and registration, follow the link above.
Happy running,
Mike
Hello Saturday Runners!
This week on September 14, our scheduled run is 20 miles out and back on the C&O Canal Towpath (downloads: cue sheet & GPS). This is our first 20-mile SLR of the season, coinciding with MTP's ramp-up to Marine Corps next month. If your own training schedule call for a different distance, this is a very easy route to modify - just turn around whenever you reach half of your desired distance! Both Jonny and I are out of town this Saturday, so Coach Big Guy will be filling in for us to lead both SLR and MTP.
Thanks this week to Emily & Kenneth Riley for post-run drinks, and Jerry McEnerney for mid-run drinks! Mid-run drinks will be located at Lock 7 on the Towpath, which if you're running 20 miles you'll pass just after 7 miles on the way out, and just before 13 miles on the way back. Hello Saturday Runners!
This week's route on Saturday, September 7, will give you a chance to demo most of the middle miles of the Marine Corps Marathon race course with 16 miles of Mock MCM (downloads: cue sheet and GPS). If you'd like to lengthen this run to 20 miles while making it even more like the race course, after about 1/2 mile take a left up Lee Highway, which will take you up and then down again on the race's biggest hill, and then a few miles later add a second out and back on Rock Creek Park, as shown on this map. I'm going to be out of town again this week, but Jill will be filling in for me to kick off both SLR and MTP.
Also this Saturday morning, we'll have Valencia from Ragnar Relays visiting both before and after the run! If you'd like to learn more about this fun race series, pick up some extra post-run refreshments/breakfast items, or try to land some give-aways, be sure either get to SLR a few minutes early, or hang out afterwards.
Thanks this week to Emily & Kenneth Riley for post-run drinks, and Paul Martinovich for mid-run drinks! Mid-run drinks will be located at about 8 miles, just after you pass the Tidal Basin paddle boat parking area, trailside at the parking exit and before the Kutz Bridge. We're now actually completely covered for drinks volunteers up through 10/12, so thank you to everyone who has gotten in touch with me! If you can help with post-run drinks on 10/19 and beyond, please feel free to send me an email to pre-claim your slot before I post an extended schedule. The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For general info on how volunteering works see the SLR FAQ or send me an email if you have any other specific questions.
Reminder - if you have not recently renewed your club membership, it expired last Saturday (Aug 31)! To check your current status or renew if necessary, log in to the club website and go to the My Membership page.
Happy running,
Mike
