Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR August 10 - Piney Branch

Hello Saturday Runners!

This week's route is the 12 mile Piney Branch loop (downloads: cue sheet and GPS). If you're at a point in your marathon training cycle where you're looking for a longer run, there's an easy modification that will make this 16 miles instead - follow the beginning of this route, and then continue on up 16th St all the way to Joyce Rd on the left, which will lead down to Rock Creek Park where you can take either Beach Drive or Ross Drive back onto the mapped route. We should have a relatively nice morning tomorrow, with dew point in the 50s, and temperature in the upper 60s!

Thanks you Emily and Kenneth Riley for post-run drinks, and Kam Yee for mid-run drinks! Mid-run drinks will be located on Piney Branch Parkway, on the right side of the road as you're heading down into Rock Creek Park (about mile 6). Our next volunteer need will be for mid-run drinks on September 7, so please let me know if you can help with this or anything else. The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For general info on how volunteering works see the SLR FAQ or send me an email if you have any other specific questions.

In other news, we have a new club apparel store, which is now up and running! For members who are on DCRRC race teams, you will still be provided with a free navy blue singlet as in the past, but you can now order a number of other additional items if you'd like.

Happy running,

Mike

SLR August 10 - Battery Kemble Loops

Hello Saturday Runners!

Our route this week is Battery Kemble Loops (downloads: cue sheet and GPS) for 16 miles. You can shorten this to a 14 mile run by skipping the actual loops of Battery Kemble park, and just running out & back to the base of the park (and the mid-run drink station). Since the rest of the route is out & back, any further shortening is as easy as an earlier turn-around point. I'm once again out of town this weekend, but Coach Jonny will be there to start things off for both MTP and SLR.

Thanks this week to Eiko Sato for post-run drinks, and Matt Hoffman for mid-run drinks! Mid-run drinks will be located on MacArthur Blvd at the base of Battery Kemble Park, near the bus stop at the intersection with Chain Bridge Rd NW. Our next volunteer needs will be for both post-run and mid-run drinks on September 9, so please let me know if you can help with this or anything else. The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For general info on how volunteering works see the SLR FAQ or send me an email if you have any other specific questions.

Happy running,

Mike

SLR July 27 - Marymount Chain Bridge

Hello Saturday Runners!

This week's route is the 14 mile Marymount Chain Bridge loop (downloads: cue sheet and GPS). You can easily modify the distance up or down on this one by choosing your bridge for return to Iwo Jima - for 12 miles return via Key Bridge, for 14 miles return via Memorial Bridge as mapped, or for 16 miles keep going and return via the 14th St Bridge. To further shorten to 10 miles, you can skip the Marymount portion and run only the Chain Bridge Loop. I'm going to be out of town again this Saturday, but Coach Big Guy will be there to kick off both MTP and SLR.

Thanks this week to Eiko Sato for post-run drinks, and Mrs. Big Guy for mid-run drinks! Mid-run drinks will be located on N Old Glebe Rd, near Fort Ethan Allen Park and Madison Community Center. Our next volunteer need will be for mid-run drinks on August 17, so please let me know if you can help with this or anything else. The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For general info on how volunteering works see the SLR FAQ or send me an email if you have any other specific questions.

Happy running,

Mike
