Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR June 29 - RFK

Hello Saturday Runners!

Our route this week on June 29 is 12 miles to RFK Stadium (downloads: cue sheet and GPS). This is basically an out and back route, so if you'd like to go any shorter it will be easy to modify by just turning around as soon as you like. If you've been with SLR for a few years you may notice that the map and cue sheet no longer include a loop around the stadium - for your safety we do not recommend running this loop due to lack of a sidewalk or shoulder, and it's still 12 miles if you just run to the front of the stadium past the Armory before turning back. For added distance, you can make this 16 miles by doing a full loop all the way down to Hains Point on your way back (starting from 15th St), or add on in any other way using Rock Creek, Mt. Vernon, Roosevelt Island, or other usual options.

Thanks this week to Mara Gramling for post-run drinks, and Ben Richter for mid-run drinks! Mid-run drinks will be located roadside on East Capitol St at 4th St, which is just before mile 5 on your way out and just after 7.5 on your way back. The full SLR schedule for this summer and early fall is now posted, and I've been hearing from a few more volunteers over the past week which is great, so let's keep that up! We however have no mid-run drinks next week at this point, and could use post-run drinks help in August and beyond.

The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For general info on how volunteering works see the SLR FAQ or send me an email if you have any other specific questions.

Coming up in a few weeks on July 13, DCRRC will be hosting our annual Track Championships at Dunbar High School on Saturday afternoon & evening. This is a one-of-a-kind event in the DC area, where ALL runners are welcome to join in for FREE to race friends & rivals in a fast track Mile, and then stick around afterward to watch some high level competition! Following the open mile heats will be invitational elite heats in the 800 m, Mile, and 3000 m Steeplechase, where world-class runners will get a last chance to qualify for USATF National Championships on the final stop of the Eastern Track League series. Don't miss this opportunity to likely witness the first sub-4:00 mile run in Washington DC! Full details as well as registration for both runners and volunteers are at the link above.

Happy running,

Mike

SLR June 22 - Mt Vernon Trail and MTP

Hello Saturday Runners!

This week's run on Saturday, June 22, will be out & back on the Mt Vernon Trail (downloads: cue sheet and GPS). You can easily tailor this route to any distance you'd like, with a few options for turn-around landmarks noted on the cue sheet linked above, or you can just use your GPS for distance on the "out" half. The scheduled distance this week is 10 miles, which would mean turning around just after the airport right around the trail intersection with Four Mile Run.

You may have noticed the SLR crowds getting a little bigger over the last couple weeks with marathon training program jump-start participants joining in, and tomorrow is the actual training program kick-off so we'll be seeing a lot more new faces this week. Over the summer in the run-up to fall marathons, with particular focus on Marine Corps, SLR will follow along the same plan for MTP long runs and routes allowing the two groups to combine and build off of each other. Please help us welcome all of the new and returning trainees!

Thanks this week to Mara Gramling for post-run drinks, and Gary Morgans for mid-run drinks! Mid-run drinks will be located at Gravelly Point just north of the airport, about 3 miles out from the start. If you're running 10 miles, you can catch a drink again on your way back at 7 miles. The full SLR schedule for this summer and early fall is now posted, and there are a lot of openings for both mid-run and post-run drinks in the coming weeks, including no mid-run drinks next week, and no post-run drinks the week after next. If these are benefits of our group run that you enjoy, please do your part and help out!

The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For general info on how volunteering works see the SLR FAQ or send me an email if you have any other specific questions.

Happy running,

Mike

SLR June 15 - Olympic Torch

Hello Saturday Runners!

This week, on Saturday June 15, our route will be Olympic Torch (downloads: cue sheet and GPS) for about 12 miles. Towards the end of the route on the Glover-Archbold trail, the lower park entrance area is closed, so you'll have to go off to the right at a trail intersection, towards P St and then Foxhall Rd, which will take you down to the closed park entrance and the Canal Rd underpass. One way to run shorter than 12 miles is to divert left onto Calvert St at Woodley Park, and then head back along Rock Creek Park followed by the Key Bridge, which would be roughly 8 miles.

Thank you Lauren Armentrout for post-run drinks this week! Please note that due to lack of a volunteer, we will once again not have mid-run drinks provided this Saturday. I've now posted the full SLR schedule for this summer and there are still many openings in the coming weeks, so if this is a benefit of our group run that you enjoy, please do your part and help out! We'll also need post-run drinks help beginning in July.

The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For general info on how volunteering works see the SLR FAQ or send me an email if you have any other specific questions.

Happy running,

Mike
