Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.
Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.
We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.
All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

Hello Saturday Runners!
The scheduled route that I had planned for this Saturday, June 8, had been the Potomac Heritage Trail, but with a report from a heads-up SLR-er that the trail entrance at the Key Bridge is closed, I've re-scheduled this week's run to be the 13 mile Cathedral Clintons route (downloads: cue sheet and GPS). If you'd like to run less than 13 miles, I'd suggest just going out & back on the Rock Creek Park trail, since the loop turnoff is just before 5 miles into the run.
Thank you Lauren Armentrout for post-run drinks this week! Please note that due to lack of a volunteer, we will not have mid-run drinks provided this Saturday. I've now posted the full SLR schedule for this summer and no mid-run drink volunteers are currently on the books for the coming weeks, so if this is a benefit of our group run that you enjoy, please do your part and help out! We'll also need post-run drinks help beginning in July.
The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For general info on how volunteering works see the SLR FAQ or send me an email if you have any other specific questions.
Happy running,
Mike
Hello Saturday Runners!
Don't forget that our meeting time is shifting to 7:00 am starting this week. This will get us out there earlier and help stave off (if not beat) the heat during the summer months. Meeting time will go back to 8:00 am in the fall, probably early October.
This Saturday's route, on June 1, will be the 13 mile MacArthur Loop (downloads: cue sheet and GPS). If you'd like a shorter run, I'd recommend just going out & back on the Capital Crescent Trail where we'll start out this route. With things heating up this week, the move back to 7:00 am is coming at a good time! We're also going to have volunteer-provided mid-run drinks on Saturday for the first time this season, so you can expect to find this between miles 7 and 8 on the route, and be sure to thank Anna for this!
Thanks this week go to Lauren Armentrout for post-run drinks, and Anna Suhring for mid-run drinks! This week's mid-run drinks will be located on 49th St between Mass Ave and Tilden. We are still in need of mid-run drink volunteers after this week, as well as post-run volunteers in a couple weeks, so let me know if you can help with either one. I'll also soon be posting a full summer schedule that will take things out through the Marine Corps Marathon in October.
First I'd like to remind everyone that after Memorial Day, starting on June 1 (next week) our meeting time will move up to 7:00 am. This will get us out there earlier and help stave off (if not beat) the heat during the summer months. Meeting time will shift back to 8:00 am in the fall, probably early October.
This Saturday, on May 24, the route will be Glover - Soapstone - Rock Creek (downloads: cue sheet and GPS) for 14 miles. You can cut off about a mile by returning over the Key Bridge instead of Memorial Bridge, or to cut an additoinal mile, take a right rather than a left on Connecticut, and return thru the Zoo instead of the Soapstone trail. For 10 miles or less, you can run out & back on the Glover - Archbold trail. Also, assuming that construction at the Glover - Archbold trail entrance is still ongoing, instead of the usual entry continue up Foxhall Rd NW, take a right on 44th St NW, and a right on P St NW which will end at an entry trail into Glover - Archbold Park.
You should have a nice sunny day for a run this week on Saturday, with temps in the mid 60s! I'm going to be out of town, but Andrew will introduce and start the run for you.
Big thanks to Charlotte and Mark Hyatt for extending thier volunteer block to cover this week's post-run drinks! We no longer have any SLR beverage volunteers on the schedule after this week so please get in touch with me ASAP if you can help. In addition, starting next week mid-run drinks are planned to begin again for the summer, but this won't happen until we get volunteers! The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For general info on how volunteering works see the SLR FAQ or send me an email if you have any other specific questions.
Happy running,
Mike
