Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR November 17 - Glover / Soapstone / Rock Creek

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday's route is a 14 mile loop of Glover - Soapstone - Rock Creek (downloads: cue sheet and GPS). With some drier and warmer weather today, hopefully the trail portions of this route will be runnable by tomorrow morning, though there will probably still be some areas of mud and wet leaves, so watch your footing. I also expect that construction at the Glover - Archbold trail entrance is still ongoing, so instead of the usual entry continue up Foxhall Rd NW, take a right on 44th St NW, and a right on P St NW which will end at an entry trail into Glover - Archbold Park. If you'd like to shorten the route, an out & back run on the Glover - Archbold trail can be up to just under 10 miles.

Thank you Rich Mendelowitz for both providing post-run drinks and filling in for me this week! We are now in need of more volunteers for post-run drinks starting next week, so please let me know right away if you can help. Post-run drinks will not resume until we get another volunteer. The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For general info on how volunteering works see the SLR FAQ or send me an email if you have any other specific questions.

The Alexandria Turkey Trot 5 Miler is coming up in less than a week on Thanksgiving Day! If you are in town, it's a great way to start off the holiday morning on a neighborhood race course that's friendly to speedsters, strollers, turkey costumes, dogs, and everything in between. This race is one of our club's premier events of the year, and our single biggest source of revenue, so we would love to see you there either running or volunteering. Registration for both is at the link above.

Happy running,

Mike

SLR November 10 - Four Mile Run Park

Hello Saturday Runners!

Tomorrow's route is Four Mile Run Park (downloads: cue sheet and GPS), for 11.5 miles. If you'd like to go shorter than this, I'd recommend out & back on the Mt Vernon Trail, as the turnoff will be at about 5 miles out. For about one extra mile you can continue past Roosevelt Island on your way back and return via Rosslyn, and for more than that go up and down the Custis Trail (or hop over the Key Bridge, etc.) before returning to the start. You should have a nice cool sunny fall morning in store tomorrow that's looking like a great day for a long run!

Thank you Christine and Paul Westcott for providing post-run drinks, and thanks to Rich Mendelowitz for filling in for me this week! SLR November 3 - National Capitol

Hello Saturday Runners!

This week's route is the 12 mile National Capitol loop (downloads: cue sheet and GPS). You can shorten the route to just under 10 miles if you return directly via Memorial Bridge, and if you'd like to add distance, Hains Point, Mt Vernon Trail, Rock Creek Park Trail, and Custis Trail are all convenient options. After some rain on Friday, it's looking like things will hopefully clear up for a great cool morning on Saturday!

Thank you Christine and Paul Westcott for providing post-run drinks, as well as filling in for me this week! We'll need more for volunteers post-run drinks after next week, so please let me know if you can help.
