Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.
Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.
We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.
All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!
For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

Hello Saturday Runners!
For those of you tapering to run Rock n Roll DC next week, this week's SLR on March 2 will be a little bit shorter than usual, Chain Bridge Loop (downloads: cue sheet and GPS) for 10 miles. If you'd like to extend it to 12 or 14 miles, you can do so by following the Marymount Chain Bridge variation of this route that's also in our regular rotation.
Thank you Jill Brasky for providing post-run drinks for the last two weeks! We will more volunteers in April and beyond, so please let me know when you can help out. The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For general info on how volunteering works see the SLR FAQ or send me an email if you have any other specific questions.
The club's annual banquet and membership meeting is this weekend on Sunday, at Maggiano's in Friendship Heights! If you're still planning to attend but haven't registered yet, you can do so on the club website until noon on Sunday. Families are welcome, and there will be plenty of food included with cash bar available. The program will include presentation of annual awards, election of the following year's board of directors, a state of the club presentation, plus guest speaker Dr. Mark Cucuzzella, one of the world's leading running doctors and creator of the Air Force Efficient Running Program.
Happy running,
Mike
Hello Saturday Runners!
Our route this week is Ross Drive (download: cue sheet and GPS) for 14.5 miles. If you'd like to go for additional distance, each loop of Beach Drive and Ross Drive is about 3.5 miles, so you can make it an 18 mile run by adding a second loop. For a shorter run, I'd suggest going out & back on the Rock Creek Park trail, turning around whenever you reach half of your desired distance.
Thank you Jill Brasky for providing our post-run drinks this week! We will need another volunteer after next week to cover 3/9 and 3/16, so please let me know if you're planning to be at SLR for these two weeks and would be willing to help. The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For general info on how volunteering works see the SLR FAQ or send me an email if you have any other specific questions.
The club's annual banquet and membership meeting is coming up soon on Sunday, March 3, at Maggiano's in Friendship Heights. Hello Saturday Runners!
This week's long run route is out & back on the C&O Canal Towpath (downloads: cue sheet and GPS), for as much mileage as you're after! The Towpath goes all the way to West Virginia, so just turn around and head back to the start when you've reached half of your distance for the day. The spring Marathon Training Program recommended mileage this week is 20 miles, which will take you to the 10 mile post just outside the beltway after the American Legion Bridge underpass. For other distances, the mile posts on the Towpath align closely to your distance from the start, so to run 16 miles instead of 20 miles, turn around at the 8 mile post, and so on. I'm going to be out of town this weekend, but Coach Jonny will get the run started for you.
We currently do not have any volunteers scheduled for post-run drinks, so please let me know ASAP if you can help. Post run drinks will not resume until the next volunteer steps up. The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For general info on how volunteering works see the SLR FAQ or send me an email if you have any other specific questions.
If you're looking for longer mid-winter race, the club's annual George Washington's Birthday Marathon is coming up this Sunday on February 17! The race includes options for a full marathon, as well as a three-runner relay, and registration includes free digital race photos, great food and finisher medals once you cross the finish line, and over $1500 in awards money to be distributed. The course includes 13 aid stations roughly every 2 miles, and is a USATF certified Boston qualifier. Even if you're not racing, we'd love to see you there as a volunteer, which you also register for via the race website linked above. We are still in need of volunteers, and all volunteers will get the same great looking long sleeve 1/4 zip tech tee as the runners.
The following weekend on February 24, DCRRC will be fielding a team for the RRCA Club Challenge Ten Miler in Columbia, MD. This is your chance to compete against other local running clubs and represent DCRRC in a cross-country style team-scored event! If you are a current club member, we will pay your entry fee, and your participation is free. Bus transportation to and from the race is also available by for $10, with pick-up & drop-off options at Courthouse or Dupont Circle.
