Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.
Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.
We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.
All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!
For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.
To receive weekly SLR updates via email, please log in and check your email subscriptions.

Hello Saturday Runners!
This week, on Saturday February 9, our route will be 16 miles to Battery Kemble Loops (downloads: cue sheet and GPS). If you'd like to run less than 16 miles, you can get 14 miles by following the route to the base of the park where the two loops start (without running the loops) and then following the route back. For less than that, you can turn around at any earlier point on the route, as the rest of it is an out & back. Some good news this week - I'm going to be back at SLR this Saturday! I won't be running anything close to 16 miles yet, but I'm still looking forward to getting out there again with everyone!
Thank you Kaitlin Slaven for post-run drinks this week! We currently do not have any more volunteers scheduled for post-run drinks after this week, so please let me know ASAP if you can help. Post run drinks will not resume until the next volunteer steps up. The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For general info on how volunteering works see the SLR FAQ or send me an email if you have any other specific questions.
If you're looking for longer mid-winter race, the club's annual George Washington's Birthday Marathon is coming up soon on February 17! The race includes options for a full marathon, as well as a three-runner relay, and registration includes free digital race photos, great food and finisher medals once you cross the finish line, and over $1500 in awards money to be distributed. The course includes 13 aid stations roughly every 2 miles, and is a USATF certified Boston qualifier. Even if you're not racing, we'd love to see you there as a volunteer, which you also register for via the race website linked above. We still need 20+ volunteers, and all volunteers will get the same great looking long sleeve 1/4 zip tech tee as the runners.
The following weekend on February 24, DCRRC will be fielding a team for the RRCA Club Challenge Ten Miler in Columbia, MD. This is your chance to compete against other local running clubs and represent DCRRC in a cross-country style team-scored event! If you are a current club member, we will pay your entry fee, and your participation is free. Bus transportation to and from the race is also available by for $10, with pick-up & drop-off options at Courthouse or Dupont Circle.
The club's annual banquet and membership meeting will be on Sunday, March 3, at Maggiano's in Friendship Heights. Families are welcome, and there will be plenty of food included with cash bar available. The program will include presentation of annual awards, election of the following year's board of directors, a state of the club presentation, plus guest speaker. Please register in advance if you plan to attend.
Happy running,
Mike
Hello Saturday Runners!
This week's route, on Saturday February 2, is 13 miles on the Cathedral - Clintons loop (downloads: cue sheet and GPS). If you return via the Key Bridge rather than Memorial Bridge it will cut about 1 mile from the route, and to cut 2 miles, you can do this on both ends of the run both heading out and heading back. I've been out of town this past week, but I understand you guys have had some cold weather... it's warming up next week starting on Saturday with an afternoon high in the 40s, but expect it to be in the 20s during tomorrow morning's run.
Coach Jonny will again be filling in for me this week, but I'm hoping and expecting to be joining you all next week! (though it would be a Saturday Short Run for me) Thank you Kaitlin Slaven for post-run drinks this week and next week! We currently do not have any more volunteers scheduled for post-run drinks after next week, so please let me know if you can help. The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. Hello Saturday Runners!
This week's long run, on Saturday January 26, was originally scheduled as a new route looping both banks of the Anacostia River, however due to an expected small crowd (with the JFK 20K / MLK 5K on Saturday), as well as all of our usual long run group leaders out of town, the new route will be postponed. Instead, this week's route is out & back on the Mt. Vernon Trail (downloads: cue sheet and GPS), which can be easily adapted to any distance that fits your training needs. The Marathon Training Program's recommended distance this week is 18 miles, which would take you down to Jones Point Park beneath the Woodrow Wilson Bridge. For any other distance, longer or shorter, you can adjust your turn-around point accordingly.
Thank you Kenneth Riley for post-run drinks this week, and Eunja Rau for filling in for me! We currently do not have any more volutneers scheculed for post-run drinks, so drinks will not resume until another volunteer steps up - please let me know ASAP if you can help. The weekly schedule of volunteers, routes, and distances is always kept up-to-date on the SLR web page, and you can email me any time to book your slot. For general info on how volunteering works see the SLR FAQ or send me an email if you have any other specific questions.
