Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR January 2 - MacArthur Loop

Hello Saturday Runners!

On Saturday, January 2, we will be running the 13 mile MacArthur Loop (additional map here). This route is one that I'm pulling from the archives, so many of you will not have run it recently, if at all. I will have cue sheets on Saturday morning, but a look at the map and directions ahead of time is helpful too. To add about 2 miles to this route, return via Memorial Bridge rather than Key Bridge at the end. For less than 13 miles, after starting with the group, I'd suggest simply running an out & back on the Capital Crescent Trail.

If you've been looking ahead at the planned upcoming SLR routes for this season, please note that I've made a few changes. All of the routes and distances are the same, but I've shuffled the order for part of the schedule to spread out the longest runs. This will hopefully improve things for everyone. Those of you training for Boston will have more recovery time between 20 mile runs and other hard workouts (including Monday tempo and Wednesday/Thursday track), and those of you training for marathons in March such as Rock n Roll DC will be better served by longer runs occurring earlier in the schedule.

Thank you Kyle Edgerton for post-run beverages! Starting on January 16, every week is in need of volunteers, so please let me know when you're available to help. Up-to-date future volunteer needs as well as a route schedule are always available on our web page, and you can email me to schedule your slot. Any time you can volunteer for at least 2 consecutive weeks is helpful, and if you can do 4 weeks (or more!) that's ideal. Volunteering is easy, and all of your expenses for supplies will be reimbursed by the club.

Happy running!

Mike

SLR December 26 - Festivus Run

Hello Saturday Runners!

The route for this Saturday, December 26, will be the 11 mile Festivus Run (additional map here), which is similar to last week's route, but in reverse and with a few extra turns. Keep an eye out for aluminum poles along the route (street lights?), and maybe throw in a few strides to impress everyone with your feats of strength!

I will be out of town this weekend, but Dan Lesmez will be starting the run for you on Saturday morning.

Thank you Jenny Taso for bringing our post-run beverages this week! Starting on January 16, every week is open for you to volunteer, so please let me know when you can pitch in. Up-to-date future volunteer needs as well as a route schedule are always available on our web page, and you can email me to schedule your slot. Any time you volunteer for at least 2 consecutive weeks is helpful, and if you can do 4 weeks (or more!) that's ideal. Volunteering is easy, and all of your expenses for supplies will be reimbursed by the club.

Happy running!

SLR December 19 - Christmas Tree Run

Hello Saturday Runners!

On Saturday, December 19, we will be doing our annual 10 mile Christmas Tree Run (map here), which goes past a number of spots in DC where you can see Christmas trees! To lengthen this route to about 13.5 mi, turn left at the Lincoln Memorial instead of crossing the bridge, and head down Ohio Dr. After one counter-clockwise loop of the Tidal Basin beginning and ending near the Jefferson Memorial, cross the 14th St. Bridge, and head back along the Mt. Vernon Trail.

The club is looking for your feedback, so if you haven't done so already, please take our membership survey! A link to the survey is also currently posted at the top of the club website's homepage. There are a few questions that specifically relate to SLR, so let us know what you'd like to see at our group run in the future. We're also currently looking for nominations (until January 5th) for the club's annual awards, which will be presented at the banquet in March.

Thanks this week go to Dan Lesmez for providing our post-run beverages over the last few weeks! Following next week, we will need volunteers for January and beyond, so please let me know when you can pitch in.

Mike
