Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR January 23 - CANCELLED

Hello Saturday Runners!

Due to the coming snowstorm, SLR will be cancelled on January 23! There is a Blizzard Watch in effect for Saturday, with 18-24 inches of snow expected, so enjoy the day off, stay warm, and be safe! If you'd like to sneak in a long run before the snow, Rich Mendelowitz will be leading an early morning run on Friday, January 22, meeting at the Arlington Planetarium parking lot (1426 N. Quincy St., Arlington, VA 22207), near Washington & Lee High School. To accommodate work schedules they will be leaving promptly at 5:15 am, and the route will be a counter-clockwise approximation of the Arlington Triangle (additional map here) SLR route for about 16 miles.

Registration is now open for the RRCA Club Challenge Ten Miler on February 28, where we compete as a club against other local running clubs. Entry is free to club members - during registration, please choose DCRRC as your affiliation, and the "Club" not "Elite" division. We will also be providing bus transportation to and from the race, similar to what we did in 2014 if you were there, with pick-ups in Courthouse and Dupont. See the DCRR homepage for registration and bus sign-up links.

Thank you Kyle Edgerton for post-run beverages! We will need more volunteers starting in mid-February, so please let me know when you're available to help. Up-to-date future volunteer needs as well as a route schedule are always available on our web page, and you can email me to schedule your slot. Any time you can volunteer for at least 2 consecutive weeks is helpful, and if you can do 4 weeks (or more!) that's ideal. Volunteering is easy, and all of your expenses for supplies will be reimbursed by the club.

Happy running!

Mike

SLR January 16 - Battery Kemble Loops

Hello Saturday Runners!

Our route this Saturday, January 16, will be Battery Kemble Loops (additional map here) for just under 16 miles. If you run out & back to the base of the park at the intersection of MacArthur Blvd and Chain Bridge Rd without doing any loops, this will be about 14 miles. For a run that's shorter still, you can turn around at any point on the route and retrace your steps back to the start. Additional mileage would be convenient to add on either the Capital Crescent or C&O Towpath trails. This route has some steep hills in the actual park loop, with a downhill section on the return leg of the Captial Crescent Trail. The JFK 20K and MLK 5K this weekend have been moved from Saturday to Sunday, so if you're planning to run SLR in addition, be sure to make it a short and easy run on Saturday!

Reistration is now open for the RRCA Club Challenge Ten Miler on February 28, where we compete as a club against other local running clubs. Entry is free to club members - during registratoin, please choose DCRRC as your affiliation, and "Club" not "Elite". SLR January 9 - Ross Drive

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday's route, on January 9, will be 14.5 miles on Ross Drive (additional map here). If you'd like additional mileage, each loop from Broad Branch Road to Ross Drive is roughly 3.5 miles, or you can alternately continue further up Beach Drive into Rock Creek Park. For a shorter run, I'd suggest out & back on the Rock Creek Park Trail. Ross Drive is a great route that will take you through some of my favorite places to run in DC!

Unfortunately I won't be able to make it to SLR this week, so Andrew Simpson will be starting things off for you on Saturday morning.

Thank you Kyle Edgerton for post-run beverages this week! We are now in need of a post-run beverage volunteer, starting next week, so please let me know when you're available to help.

Mike
