Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

SLR March 12 - Long Bridge Park

Hello Saturday Runners!

Our route on Saturday, March 12, will be Long Bridge Park (additional map here) for 15 miles. To shorten the run to roughly 10 miles, you can cut across from Crystal Drive just before 18th St. to the Mt. Vernon Trail at National Airport. If you'd rather add distance, you can return all the way up the Mt. Vernon Trail to Rosslyn for an extra mile, or add laps of Roosevelt Island on the way for even more miles. I hope everyone is enjoying the great weather this week, and we should have more of it on the way for Saturday morning!

Thank you Angela Katson for our post-run beverages this week! We will need more volunteers starting after next week, so please let me know when you're available to help. Up-to-date future volunteer needs as well as a route schedule are always available on our web page, and you can email me to schedule your slot. Any time you can volunteer for at least 2 consecutive weeks is helpful, and if you can do 4 weeks (or more!) that's ideal. Volunteering is easy, and all of your expenses for supplies will be reimbursed by the club.

Happy running!

Mike

SLR March 5 - Custis to W&OD

Hello Saturday Runners!

On Saturday, March 5, our long run will be out & back along the Custis and W&OD trails (additional map here). The scheduled distance is 20 miles, but if you're tapering for the Rock n Roll Marathon next week I'd certainly suggest something less. To get 20 miles, the turnaround point is just beyond the Beltway, but you can turn around at any point along the trail to get whatever distance you would like, be it shorter or longer.

Thank you Franco Ordonez for post-run beverages! We will need more volunteers starting in late March, so please let me know when you're available to help.

SLR February 20 - Glover Archbold Pandas

Hello Saturday Runners!

This week's long run on Saturday, February 20, will be 13 miles on Glover Archbold Pandas (additional map here). To shorten the run to 10 miles or less, you can run out & back along only the Glover Archbold trail, or to add distance you can go all the way to the 14th Street Bridge (or beyond) on your way back. It's looking like you'll have a great day to run on Saturday, with high temps forecast in the 60s!

I'm going to be out of town this weekend, but Dan Lesmez will kick things off for you on Saturday morning.

Thank you Rochelle Sceats for our post-run beverages! After this week, we will not have post-run beverages until the next volunteer steps up, so please let me know when you're available to help.

Mike
