Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR April 4 - Mt Vernon - Hains Point T

Hello Saturday Runners!

Our route on Saturday April 4 will be the Mt Vernon - Hains Point T for 14 miles. I scheduled this route hoping to catch the cherry blossoms around Hains Point, but it might still be a little early unfortunately. On the other hand, those of you running the Cherry Blossom Ten Miler the following week are predicted to see peak bloom! To shorten this route, you can turn around sooner on Mt Vernon (the out/back section as-is from the 14th St Bridge to Four Mile Run covers about 5.5 miles), or to add about 1 mi you can do a partial lap around the Tidal Basin (a la Water Route).

Thank you Miguel Cuya for stepping up on post-run beverages for April! However, we still need a volunteer to fill in next week April 11. The month of May and beyond also need to be covered, so please volunteer if you plan to be at SLR for at least two consecutive weeks. Visit the SLR page any time to see current needs, and email if you can help. This is an easy way to support your fellow runners, and the club will reimburse all expenses.

Happy running!

Mike

SLR - Call For Volunteers

Saturday Runners,

Thanks go to our recent volunteers, but this past Saturday was the last week with post-run beverage volunteers identified. Because this is entirely a volunteer-provided service, post-run drinks will not resume until upcoming volunteer slots are filled, so please volunteer now if you plan to be at SLR for at least two consecutive weeks. Are you running with the Saturday group but haven't volunteered yet? Has it been a while since you last volunteered? Now is a great time to pitch in and support your fellow runners! SLR beverage duty is easy, doesn't take a lot of time, and the club will reimburse all expenses. In addition, this can also fulfill your volunteer credit for awards in the Snowball Series (or Bunion Derby if you volunteer in the summer). Visit the SLR page any time to see current needs, and email if you can help.

Looking ahead, later on in the spring we will also be starting to line up volunteers to cover mid-run drinks during the summer months. Keep this in mind as well, and please do your part to help hydrate all of us!

Happy running!

Mike

SLR March 28 - Capital Crescent / Rock Creek

Hello Saturday Runners!

The route for Saturday March 28 will be 22 miles on the Capital Crescent / Rock Creek Loop (aka Big Loop). Three weeks out from the Boston Marathon, this is a good chance to get your last long run. Whlie this route has a number of water fountains along the way, it's still relatively early in the spring with a forecasted temperature not much above freezing on Saturday morning, so I'd suggest carrying your own fluids if it's important to you.

Thank you Lucy Cutler for providing post-run drinks this weekend! We will need beverage volunteers for the rest of the spring starting next week, so please volunteer now if you plan to be at SLR for at least two consecutive weeks. Post-run drinks will not resume after this weekend until volunteer slots are filled. Visit the SLR page any time to see current needs, and email if you can help. This is an easy way to support your fellow runners, and the club will reimburse all expenses.

Happy running!

Mike
