Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR April 25 - Olympic Torch

Hello Saturday Runners!

Our Saturday morning route on April 25th is pulled from the archives, but should be farily simple to follow. Check out the cue sheet and course map for Olympic Torch (and/or the additional map here) to familiarize yourself with the route. This is a good chance to take it easy on the Glover-Archbold trail running it in the downhill direction, rather than our usual direction that takes us uphill on the trail. The planned route is 12.4 miles, with an 8 mile option given on the posted cue sheet, or you can also easily shorten it slightly to about 11 miles - to do this, take a left on Mass Ave at Dupont Circle, and pick up the Glover-Archbold trail heading south just after Macomb St.

Thank you Miguel Cuya for April's post-run beverages! Once again we have run out of volunteers for post-run drinks, and now need someone to cover starting next week, so please step up if you plan to be at SLR for at least two consecutive weeks. Visit the SLR page any time to see current needs, and email if you can help. I plan to post June routes soon, so don't be shy if you'd like to volunteer for any dates beyond the end of May. Beverage duty is easy, doesn't take much time, and the club will reimburse all expenses. This is an entirely volunteer supported service so, no volunteers means no drinks!

Happy running!

Mike

SLR April 18 - Normanstone Klingle

Hello Saturday Runners!

This week's Saturday (April 18th) morning run is 13 miles on the Normanstone - Klingle route (additional map here). Easy ways to add distance if you'd like more than 13 miles are on the Rock Creek Trail or C&O Canal Towpath, or one extra circuit of the loop will add approximately 4 miles. For a shorter run on a similar route, I'd suggest an out & back on Rock Creek Trail. I hope everyone is enjoying the spring, and Saturday morning's forecast looks like some excellent running weather! Congrats to our Cherry Blossom 9.39 Miler runners, and good luck to our Boston Marathon runners!

Thank you Miguel Cuya for April's post-run beverages! Volunteers are needed for the month of May (only 2 weeks away) and beyond, so please step up if you plan to be at SLR for at least two consecutive weeks. Visit the SLR page any time to see current needs, and email if you can help. Beverage duty is easy, doesn't take much time, and the club will reimburse all expenses.

Happy running!

Mike

SLR April 11 - Marymount - Chain Bridge

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday, April 11, we will be running the Marymount - Chain Bridge route. This route provides a few options for distance, with the as-written route on the map and cue sheet at 14 miles. If you'd like to make it a 12 mile run, return to Iwo Jima via the Key Bridge rather than Memorial Bridge. If you're tapering for Boston and would like a 10 mile run, in addition to returning via the Key Bridge, do not turn left into Taylor Park, but continue straight on Military Rd until you reach Old Glebe Rd where a right turn picks up the route. While it's a rainy week right now, the forecast for this weekend looks like we have some excellent running weather coming up for both SLR and the Cherry Blossom Ten Miler!

Thank you Grace Chan for covering this week's post-run beverages! Volunteers are needed for the month of May and beyond, so please step up if you plan to be at SLR for at least two consecutive weeks. Visit the SLR page any time to see current needs, and email if you can help. This is an easy way to support your fellow runners, and the club will reimburse all expenses.

Happy running!

Mike
