Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR December 20 – Christmas Tree Run

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday, December 20th, we will be running the Christmas Tree Run, a 10-mile run that goes past a number of decorated trees around our great city. Since the linked route is a USATF map, turn-by-turn directions are below.

Thanks to Angela Katson for the post-run drinks this weekend! Please visit the SLR page to see current post-run volunteer needs and email SLR@dcroadrunners.org if you can help. The club reimburses all expenses.

Here are the route directions:

From Iwo, run across the Key Bridge and turn right on M Street. Enjoy the Christmas Trees in Key Park and at the far end of M Street.

Continue onto Pennsylvania Avenue to 17th Street. Turn right on 17th and then left to run in front of the White House. See the White House Christmas Tree and Menorah when you pass the Ellipse.

Cross 15th Street (you can stop inside the Willard Hotel to see their tree) and continue down Pennsylvania Ave to Constitution Ave.

Bear left on Constitution. Turn left onto Louisiana Ave. Run to Union Station (stop inside to see their tree) and then take Columbus Circle, NE, in front of Union Station to First Street, NE.

Take First Street, NE, behind the Capitol to Independence Ave. Turn right onto Independence and run down the hill.

After you pass S. Capitol Street, SE, turn right to cut over to Southwest Drive, which takes you in front of the Capitol. See the Capitol Tree.

Take Maryland Ave to cross 3rd Street, SW. (You may be able to see some trees in the Botanic Garden when you pass.) Turn right onto 3rd Street and run to the mall.

Run down the mall, past the Washington Monument, past the reflecting pool and Lincoln Memorial, and across Memorial Bridge. Finish at Iwo.

You can make it a 13.5 mile run by turning left onto Ohio Drive when you reach the Lincoln Memorial, going counterclockwise around the tidal basin, and then crossing the 14th Street Bridge and taking the Mount Vernon Trail back to Iwo (turn left before the Memorial Bridge). Skipping the tidal basin loop makes it about a 11.5 mile run.

See you on Saturday - have a great run!

SLR December 13 – Ross Drive

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday, December 13th, we will be running the Ross Drive route, listed at about 14 miles. This route is always a favorite, so enjoy the nice winter run!  It looks like it will be cold but sunny Saturday morning.

Thanks to Sam Brummitt for the post-run drinks this weekend! We do not have post-run drink volunteers after this weekend; if you are in town and haven’t volunteered for beverages in a while, please consider volunteering.  The club reimburses all expenses and everyone who runs appreciates it.  If you can help out, please email SLR@dcroadrunners.org.

Good luck to everyone running the Gar Williams half marathon on Sunday.  See you on Saturday - have a great run!

SLR December 6 – Upton Hill

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday, December 6th, we will be running the Up Upton Hill route, listed at 12 miles. I’ve always liked this route, even though it is HILLY! At least the second half is downhill. :)

Thanks again to Flora Arabo for the post-run drinks this weekend! We do not have post-run drink volunteers for the next three weekends, and no volunteers means no Gatorade. If you can help out, please email SLR@dcroadrunners.org. The club reimburses all expenses.

SLR routes through February have been posted to the SLR page; feel free to take a look if you like knowing the routes in advance.

See you on Saturday - have a great run!

Emily
