Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

SLR March 7 - Battery Kemble Loops

Hello Saturday Runners!

Once again, snow in the week leading up to SLR might become a factor... The route for this Saturday, March 7th, is Battery Kemble Loops for 16 miles, which will hopefully be mostly clear by Saturday from any snow that comes down on Thursday. The Capital Crescent Trail has been getting plowed this winter, and roads in the Palisades neighborhood should be plowed as well. If the short connector trail we usually use from CCT to the reservoir at Potomac and Norton isn't passable, there is also a staircase that goes between CCT and Potomac Ave which could be an option (after turning around at the water fountain). If the Battery Kemble trail is too wet or snowy/icy, an alternate I have used in the past to get 16 miles while still running up the big hill at the park is shown below - keep going on Chain Bridge Rd NW past the park entrance, turn right at Loughboro Rd NW, right again on Foxhall Rd, and turn around when you reach Garfield St NW. To make the run 14 miles, you can cut off the park loops (or road out/back) and turn around on MacArthur Blvd at the base of the park. As always, please use caution around ice that may be remaining, and only run where conditions are such that you feel comfortable.

Thank you Kyle Edgerton for picking up post-run drinks for the first two weeks in March!  We will need beverage volunteers for the rest of the spring starting in April, so please consider volunteering if you plan to be at SLR for a few consecutive weeks.  Visit the SLR page any time to see current needs, and email if you can help.  This is an easy way to support your fellow runners, and the club will reimburse all expenses.

The DCRRC annual banquet will be on Sunday March 15th, 6:00 pm at Maggiano's Little Italy in Friendship Heights - spend some non-running time with your SLR friends! The event will include a family-style dinner, club annual awards, board elections, and a keynote speaker from Back On My Feet. More information and registration is available here.

Happy running!

SLR February 28 - Route Change: Capital Crescent

Hello Saturday Runners!

The planned route for this Saturday, February 28th, was Glover Archbold Pandas for 13.5 miles, but once again a route change is in order since the Glover-Archbold trail is likely to be snowy and icy with the weather we've gotten over the last week. Because we ran Custis last week, this week I will suggest out & back on the Capital Crescent Trail. I'm not 100% sure the trail will be clear, but reports from earlier this winter indicate that it was getting plowed relatively promptly in January by both NPS and Montgomery County. For a reference point, the water fountain just before the Delacarlia Tunnel is 5 miles out, and at mile marker 6.5 on the trail. As always, please use caution around ice that may be remaining, and only run if conditions are such that you feel comfortable.

Thank you Christine Westcott for covering post-run drinks this weekend and during the month of February!  We need a beverage volunteer for two weeks starting next week, March 7th and 14th, so please volunteer if you plan to be at SLR for those two Saturdays.  Visit the SLR page any time to see current needs, and email if you can help.  This is an easy way to support your fellow runners, and the club will reimburse all expenses.

SLR February 21 - Route Change: Custis / W&OD

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday, February 21st, the originally planned route was Potomac Overlook Loops for 13 miles, but with this week's snow the trail is not currently runnable.  As an alternate, I will suggest an out & back run on the Custis/W&OD trails, because they were plowed promptly and are completely clear at least all the way out to East Falls Church.  From Iwo Jima to East Falls Church and back will get you about 13 miles.  To add more distance or variety, a loop past Arlington Cemetary, Memorial Bridge, Rock Creek Trail, Georgetown, and Key Bridge will add about 4.5 miles and should also be relatively clear of snow and ice.

Thank you Christine Westcott for post-run drinks this weekend!  The next beverage opening is coming up soon on March 7th and 14th, so please volunteer if you plan to be at SLR for those two weeks.  Visit the SLR page any time to see current needs, and email if you can help.  This is an easy way to support your fellow runners, and the club will reimburse all expenses.

Happy running!

Mike
