Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR January 24 - Piney Branch

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday we will be running the Piney Branch route, which is just under 12 miles as written.  To extend it to 13 miles, return via Memorial Bridge rather than Canal/Key Bridge.  For 16 miles, continue North on 16th Street for about 2 miles past Arkansas Ave (past the tennis courts, and just past Military Rd NW) until Joyce Rd on the left, go past the golf course on Joyce, head South through Rock Creek on either Beach Dr or Ross Dr, and return via the Georgetown waterfront and Key Bridge.  To shorten the route to 9 or 10 miles, turn left off of 16th Street on Columbia Rd, right on Adams Mill Rd (which turns into Calvert St), and return on the Rock Creek Trail to either bridge.

Thanks to Erik Price for post-run drinks this weekend!  We're covered for post-run drinks in the short term, but need a volunteer for March 7th and 14th; please visit the SLR page to see current needs and email SLR@dcroadrunners.org if you can help.  This is an easy way to support your fellow SLR-ers, and the club will reimburse all expenses.

I'm not going to be at SLR this weekend, but Rich Mendelowitz will get things started for you on Saturday morning.

Happy running!

Mike

SLR January 17 - UPDATE

Saturday Runners,

Due to the recent change in start location for the club's JFK 5K/20K race, this week's route will be modified slightly.  The unaltered route would put us on the C&O Towpath at the same time as the 5K, running into oncoming race traffic.  The Towpath is reportedly mostly clear, but still has a few patches of ice, so to avoid any issues we'll be running the Marymount Chain Bridge route in reverse.  This will put the hills in the second half of the route, making for a tougher workout, so save some energy in the first half (and get ready to run UP the steep hill from Chain Bridge to Randolph)!

Happy running,

Mike

SLR January 17 - Marymount Chain Bridge

Hello Saturday Runners!

This Saturday morning we will be running the Marymount Chain Bridge route, with a hilly first half followed by a nice & flat second half.  The standard route is 14 miles, but there are plenty of options to either shorten or lengthen this one.  For 12 miles, come back to Iwo Jima via the Key Bridge instead of Memorial Bridge.  To get 10 miles, continue straight on Military Rd. (skipping the Taylor Park trail) to Randolph St. and Chain Bridge, while also returning via Key Bridge.  For anything longer than 14, I'd suggest adding an out-and-back section on any of the C&O Towpath, the Rock Creek Trail, or the Mall.

Thanks to Andrew Simpson for post-run drinks this weekend!  We're covered for post-run drinks through the end of February, but could use volunteers for March and beyond; please visit the SLR page to see current needs and email SLR@dcroadrunners.org if you can help.  This is an easy way to support your fellow SLR-ers, and the club will reimburse all expenses.

Happy running,

Mike
