Iwo Jima Memorial

Welcome! This is the home of the world-famous (well, maybe locally well-known) SLR.

Our start time is at 8:00 AM until next summer! Every Saturday we meet at North Meade Street Park, a small park northwest of the USMC War Memorial (Iwo Jima Memorial) in Rosslyn. The closest address for mapping purposes is 1300 Arlington Blvd, and street parking is available in the neighborhoods adjacent to N. Meade Street. Be mindful of parking signs, since Arlington County enforces them enthusiastically, and please do not park on Marine Memorial Circle (inside Iwo Jima), because this parking area is for memorial use only. At least one porta-john is available year-round near the Iwo Jima Memorial, and the memorial's water fountain is usually on during the summer.

We run rain or shine! In cases of extreme weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, heat waves) we do occasionally either change our meeting time or cancel the run for safety, but the run will be held as planned unless otherwise posted via email/twitter/facebook and here on the SLR web page.

All are welcome! We're an informal group, and there are no requirements for speed, racing experience, or what distance means "long" for you, other than the suggested route that most of our group will be running each week. If you don't want to run the same distance or course as the main group, you can go out for half of your own target distance and re-trace your steps back to Iwo Jima. More specific route info and mileage options will be given in the email/post preceding each Saturday's run. SLR always features a run from our extensive Route Catalog, which gives us a wide range of options to keep things fresh for you each week. We have routes that are flat, hilly, looped, out & back, roads, sidewalks, trails, and more, reaching all around the local area of DC, VA, and MD!

For more details about Saturday Long Runs please read our Frequently Asked Questions to get a sense for what it's like to run with us, or send an email to Anna if you have any other questions that are not covered.

SLR March 21 - Arlington Triangle

Hello Saturday Runners!

The route for Saturday March 21 will be Arlington Triangle for 16 miles. To get 18 miles, at Lynn St. you can continue on the Mt. Vernon Trail past Roosevelt Island and back via Memorial Bridge, or to get a shorter run you can turn the route into an out & back. I will be out of town this weekend, so Rich Mendelowitz is going to start you off on Saturday morning. Since there's some snow (that appears to be minor) in the forecast for Friday which I won't be around to see, I'll let him make the call as to whether any route modifications are necessary.

Thanks go to Lucy Cutler for providing post-run drinks this weekend! We will need beverage volunteers for the rest of the spring starting in April, so please volunteer if you plan to be at SLR for at least two consecutive weeks. Visit the SLR page any time to see current needs, and email if you can help. This is an easy way to support your fellow runners, and the club will reimburse all expenses.

Happy running!

Mike

SLR March 14 - Custis to W&OD

Hello Saturday Runners!

After three weeks of snow interruptions, we're back to your regularly scheduled SLR routes, which will be Custis to W&OD on Saturday March 14. This route will keep us in VA during the Rock 'n Roll Marathon (good luck to those of you running!), while also providing a 20+ mi long run opprotunity with some moderate but persistant hills for those of you preparing for Boston. The Four Courts Four Miler will also be going through Rosslyn along Wilson Blvd starting at 9:00 am, so beware of road closures, and cross carefully on your way back. Unfortunately rain is in the forecast for Saturday morning, though at least the temperature should be much more spring-like than what we've been seeing lately. While this Saturday is not only Pi day, during your long run this week you will be experiencing 3-14-15 9:26:53, a very unique date/time combo!

Thank you Kyle Edgerton for providing post-run drinks for the first two weeks in March! We will need beverage volunteers for the rest of the spring starting in April, so please consider volunteering if you plan to be at SLR for at least two consecutive weeks. Visit the SLR page any time to see current needs, and email if you can help. This is an easy way to support your fellow runners, and the club will reimburse all expenses.

The DCRRC annual banquet will be on Sunday March 15th, 6:00 pm at Maggiano's Little Italy in Friendship Heights - spend some non-running time with your SLR friends! The event will include a family-style dinner, club annual awards, board elections, and a keynote speaker from Back On My Feet. More information and registration is available here.

Happy running!

Mike

SLR March 7 - Update: RFK

Saturday Runners,

The scouting report on the Capital Crescent Trail is that while it is plowed, it's still very icy right now, and overnight temperatures tonight in the teens won't help things. I was hoping to preserve the planned route this week, but the snow turned out to be more than I expected, so I'm going to make a last minute change. Tomorrow's alternate route RFK should be relatively clear, since it's mostly on roads that will have been plowed. Particularly with the snow (or any other day, really) I would recommend skipping the actual loop around RFK because it has no sidewalk or shoulder, which trims the route to 12 miles. If you'd like 16 miles to match the planned Battery Kemble distance, you can add a dip down to Hains Point on the way back by taking a left at the Washington Monument. Take another left just before the Jefferson Memorial onto Ohio Drive, and follow it down around the point and back to the Lincoln Memorial.

Happy Running!

Mike
